In 579, Huike returned to Yedu and expounded the dharma, drawing large numbers to listen to his teachings and arousing the hostility of other Buddhist teachers, one of whom, Tao-heng, paid money to have Huike killed but Huike converted the would-be assassin.

He is considered to be the Dharma successor of the second Chinese Patriarch, Dazu Huike (, Wade-Giles:, Japanese: ).

Dazu Huike ( 487 – 593 ) (; Chinese for short: 慧可 ; pinyin: Huìkě ; Wade-Giles: Hui-k ’ o ; Japanese: Taiso Eka ) is considered the Second Patriarch of Chinese Chán and the twenty-ninth since Gautama Buddha.

The Hsu kao-seng chuan says that Huike was born in Hu-lao ( Ssu-shui hsien, Henan ) and his secular name was Shénguāng ( 神光, Wade-Giles: Shen-kuang ; Japanese: Shinko ).

Tao-hsuan referred to Huike ( and others ) as dhyana masters ( Wade-Giles: ch ’ an-shih ; Japanese: zenji ), highlighting the importance of meditation practice in these early years of Chan development.

Tao-hsuan listed Huike and his circle of disciples as masters of meditation, and the Lankavatara Sutra, in his Further Biographies of Eminent Monks ( Chinese: 高僧傳 Wade-Giles: Hsu kao-seng chuan ; Japanese: Zokuk kosoden )

One text that was circulating at the time of Huike was the Treatise on the Two Entrances and Four Practices ( Wade-Giles: Erh-ju ssu-hsing lun ; Pinyin: Erru sixing lun ).

There is some evidence that both Huike and Bodhidharma based their teachings on the Lankavatara Sutra, although this cannot be firmly established by modern scholars.

There are discrepancies about how long Sengcan stayed with Huike.

Later, the Tang Dynasty emperor De Zong gave Huike the honorific name Dazu (“ Great Ancestor ”) Some traditions have it that Huike was executed after complaints about his teachings by influential Buddhist priests.

The first book was taken by Bodhidharma's disciple Huike, and disappeared ; as for the second, the monks selfishly coveted it, practicing the skills therein, falling into heterodox ways, and losing the correct purpose of cultivating the Real.

It is said that Sengcan was over forty years old when he first met Huike in 536 and that he stayed with his teacher for six years.

The Transmission of the Lamp records that he “ attended Huike for two years ” after which Huike passed on the robe of Bodhidharma and Bodhidharma ’ s Dharma ( generally considered to be the Lankavatara Sutra ), making him the Third Patriarch of Chan.

However, the Lamp records claim that after giving Sengcan Dharma transmission, Huike warned Sengcan to live in the mountains and “ Wait for the time when you can transmit the Dharma to someone else .” as a prediction made to Bodhidharma ( Huike ’ s teacher ) by Prajnadhara, the twenty-seventh Chan ancestor in India, foretold of a coming calamity.

A scholar in both Buddhist scriptures and classical Chinese texts, including Taoism, Huike was considered enlightened but criticised for not having a teacher.

Other famous works by Sesshū include the Buddhist picture Huike Offering His Arm to Bodhidharma, painted in 1496 and designated as National Treasure of Japan in 2004, and a pair of decorative screens depicting flowers and birds.

According to Dumoulin, in 574 the accounts say that he fled with Huike to the mountains due to the Buddhist persecution underway at that time.

The Wudeng Huiyan ( Compendium of Five Lamps ) compiled by Dachuan Lingyin Puji ( 1179 – 1253 ) claims that Huike lived to the age of one hundred seven.

For instance, Tian Zhenda, who played the mayor, was the real-life mayor of a small village, and the primary actors Wei Minzhi and Zhang Huike were selected from among thousands of students in rural schools.

There are indications that Huiguang, Sengchou and even Huike, Bodhidarma's immediate successor as Patriarch of Chán Buddhism, may have been military men before retiring to the monastic life.

In the Two Entrances and Four Acts and the Continued Biographies of Eminent Monks, Daoyu and Huike are the only explicitly identified disciples of Bodhidharma.

Sengcan, like Bodhidharma and Huike before him, was reputed to be a devotee and specialist in the study of the Lankavatara Sutra, which taught the elimination of all duality and the “ forgetting of words and thoughts ”, stressing the contemplation of wisdom.

The earliest recorded note naming Sengcan is in Further Biographies of Eminent Monks ( 645 ) ( Japanese, Zoku kosoden ; Pin-yin, Hsu kao-seng chuan ) by Tao-hsuan (?- 667 ) where Sengcan is named, immediately after Huike ’ s name, as one of seven disciples of Huike in a biographical entry of the Lankavatara sutra master, Fa-ch ’ ung ( 587-665 ) No further information is given.

Some have speculated that it was merely the fact that Sengcan ’ s name immediately followed Huike ’ s name in the latter work that led to him being named as the Third Patriarch of Chan.
