Martin Luther's powerful testimony of faith at the Diet of Worms in 1521 made an indelible impression upon his mind, and the vigorous sermons of evangelical preachers in the pulpits of St. Lawrence and St. Sebald in Nuremberg, during the diet there in 1522, deepened the impression.

In 1521, Schwenckfeld began to preach the gospel, and in 1522 won Duke Friedrich II over to Protestantism.

In 1521 or 1522 he started studies at the school of St. Jerome at Liège, and went on to the University of Leuven.

Later several mini states were established in what is now Thuringia, and Eisenach became a principality on its own in 1521.
