In an attempt to honor Pizarro before leaving, Almagro refounded the native city of Quito as " San Francisco de Quito " in August 1534.

The first known European to explore Maranhão was the Spanish explorer Vicente Yáñez Pinzón in 1500, but was granted to João de Barros in 1534 as a Portuguese hereditary captaincy.

In 1534 Belalcázar separated from Pizarro's expedition to find the city of Quito, and later in his search of El Dorado he entered the territory of what is now Colombia, founding the cities of Pasto and Popayán.
