The Leland Trail is a footpath, which follows the footsteps of John Leland as he traversed South Somerset between 1535 and 1543 in the course of his investigation of the region's antiquities.

When antiquary John Leland visited the castle some time between 1535 and 1543, he noted that:

Thomas Manners ( c. 1488 – 1543 ), son of the 12th Baron de Ros of Hamlake, Truibut and Belvoir, was created Earl of Rutland in the Peerage of England in 1525.

He sought to bring about an alliance between England and Spain in 1543, and was created Baron Wriothesley of Titchfield in 1544.

Sir George, 12th Baron de Ros's son was Thomas Manners, 1st Earl of Rutland ( 1488 – 1543 ), who inherited the barony.

Thomas Manners, 1st Earl of Rutland, 13th Baron de Ros of Helmsley ( c. 1492 – 20 September 1543 ) was created an earl by King Henry VIII of England in 1525.

He also held the title of 14th Baron de Ros of Hamlake, a title to which he acceded in 1543.

He was confirmed in the captainship and rule of Clanricarde, and on 1 July 1543, he was created Earl of Clanricarde and Baron of Dunkellin in the peerage of Ireland.

Andrew Windsor, 1st Baron Windsor ( 1467 – 1543 ) was an English nobleman, MP and Keeper of the Wardrobe.

He had been created Baron Parr of Kendal in 1539, Earl of Essex in 1543 and Marquess of Northampton in 1547.
