In 1548 St. Ignatius founded there the first Jesuit college of the world, which later gave birth to the Studium Generale ( the current University of Messina ).

As part of the Burgundian Circle, the Spanish Netherlands were subject of a special defence guarantee by the Empire, according to the agreement of Augsburg of 1548 between the Empire and Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor ( who was also King of Spain ).

His first achievements ( 1540 – 45 ) were the rood-screen in Saint-Germain l ' Auxerrois, of which only some sculptures by Goujon have been saved and in Paris the Hôtel de Ligneris ( 1548 – 50, now the Musée Carnavalet, which was thoroughly altered by François Mansart ).

Joining the League of Torgau in 1526, he acted in unison with the Protestants, and was among the princes who banded and plotted together to overthrow Charles V after the issue of the Augsburg Interim in May 1548.

The church of the Assumption, with a marble portal from 1548, has a Renaissance style interior.

Battles with other tribes continued up to 1548, when the Q ' eqchi ' in Nueva Sevilla, Izabal where defeated, leaving the Spanish in complete control of the region.

In 1545, he followed with the De natura eorum quae effluunt e terra ; in 1546 the De veteribus et novis metallis, a comprehensive account of the discovery and occurrence of minerals and also more commonly known as De Natura Fossilium ; in 1548, the De animantibus subterraneis ; and in the two following years a number of smaller works on the metals.

Along with Julius von Pflug, bishop of Naumburg-Zeitz, and Michael Helding, titular bishop of Sidon, he prepared the Augsburg Interim of 1548, a proposed settlement under which Protestants would accept all Catholic authority, being permitted to retain the Protestant teaching on justification but otherwise compelled to accept Catholic doctrine and practice.

In 1548 ( or 1550 ) he was granted the supervision of the Vatican Library, with the title of Protettore della Biblioteca Apostolica.

He then resolved to sever his connections of the time, and went to Geneva, the French city of refuge for Evangelicals ( adherents of the Reformation movement ), where he arrived with Claudine on October 23, 1548.

Francis Walsingham matriculated at King's College, Cambridge, in 1548 with many other Protestants but as an undergraduate of high social status did not sit for a degree.

Religious books from the time of the early printing press include the Book of Common Prayer from 1549, a 1585 Baskerville Bible with its revolutionary type-face, and also a collection of books by the Dutch philosopher and theologian Erasmus published from 1545 to 1548.

After Joan of Kent was imprisoned in 1548 and convicted in April 1549, John Foxe, one of the few Protestants opposed to burnings, approached Rogers to intervene to save Joan, but he refused with the comment that burning was “ sufficiently mild ” for a crime as grave as heresy.

It was not until 1548 with Edward VI's charter that Lichfield had anything like a secular government.
