The Vow of Louis XIII, exhibited at the Salon of 1824, finally brought Ingres critical success.

Théodore Géricault saw it on a visit to London and was soon praising Constable in Paris, where a dealer, John Arrowsmith, bought four paintings, including The Hay Wain, which was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1824, winning a gold medal.

His imaginative reconstructions of this temple were exhibited in Rome and Paris in 1824 and he went on to publish these as Architecture polychrome chez les Grecs ( 1830 ) and later in Restitution du Temple d ' Empedocle a Selinote ( 1851 ).

In 1824 the Salon de Paris exhibited works of John Constable.

William Allingham ( 1824 – 1889 ) was another important Unionist figure in Irish poetry.

An interesting variation on the tradition of the picaresque is The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan ( 1824 ), a satirical view on early nineteenth century Persia, written by a British diplomat, James Morier.

Between 1824 and 1826 he lived and worked in Scarborough, and was responsible for the building of the Rotunda, a geological museum devoted to the Yorkshire coast. The Rotunda was re-opened as ' Rotunda – The William Smith Museum of Geology ', on 9 May 2008 by Lord Oxburgh, however, the Prince of Wales visited the Rotunda as early as 14 September 2007 to view the progress of the refurbishment of this listed building.

Although R v Scully ( 1824 ) 171 ER 1213 held that it was not justifiable to shoot an intruder merely to arrest him, on the facts, “ the life of the prisoner was threatened, and if he considered his life in actual danger, he was justified in shooting the deceased as he had done ; but if, not considering his own life in danger, he rashly shot this man, who was only a trespasser, he would be guilty of manslaughter .” See self-defence ( Australia ) for a comparative view on whether the use of excessive force causing death should give rise to a mitigatory defence and " Reform " below.

In 1818 he published, in four volumes, The Political State of the British Empire, containing a general view of the domestic and foreign possessions of the crown, the laws, commerce, revenue, offices, and other establishments, civil and military ; in 1824, Observations on the Vagrant Act and some other Statutes, and on the Powers and Duties of Justices of the Peace, in the main a protest against some " nanny state " legislation of the time ; and in 1839 the Memoirs of John Bannister the actor, whom he had known well.

A hemiplegic patient who could not speak led Paul Broca ( 1824 – 1880 ) to the view that functions in the cerebral cortex were anatomically localised.
