Among the most prominent citizens of Knoxville during the Antebellum years was James White's son, Hugh Lawson White ( 1773 – 1840 ).

By 1840, James Taylor White, in cooperation with Jones & Co., an English firm, had built what was probably the first meat packing plant in Texas on the banks of the Trinity River in Liberty, marked also by Historical marker.

The two became engaged in the autumn of 1840 ; her father Abijah White, a wealthy merchant from Watertown, insisted that their wedding be postponed until Lowell had gainful employment.

Hugh Lawson White ( October 30, 1773April 10, 1840 ) was a prominent American politician during the first third of the 19th century.

Her story formed the basis of John Webster's drama, The White Devil, or The Tragedy of Paolo Giordano Ursini, Duke of Brachiano ( 1612 ), of Stendhal's novella Vittoria Accoramboni ( 1837-1839 ), of Ludwig Tieck's novel, Vittoria Accoramboni ( 1840 ) and of Robert Merle's novel l ' Idole ( 1987 ) published in English translation as Vittoria.

He died at home in Harrodsburg on May 19, 1840, and was buried on the grounds of his estate, White Hall.
