The children's author Mary Grant Bruce was born in the town in 1878.

The Martin Homeplace Museum showcases artifacts and memorabilia from Caldwell Parish's rich cultural history in a farmhouse built in 1878 on an 1816 Spanish Land Grant.

The Grant administration did little to pursue a treaty, and in 1878, the concession to build the canal fell to a French firm.

President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him the first President of the Board of Commissioners for the District of Columbia, the highest governing office of Washington, D. C., in which Dennison served from 1874 to 1878.

While in this latter post, he participated in the lengthy 1879 visit of former President and General Ulysses S. Grant to Japan at the conclusion of Grant's around-the-world tour that started in 1878.

Sir Francis Grant, RA ( 18 January 1803 – 5 October 1878 ), was a Scottish portrait painter, who painted Queen Victoria and many distinguished British aristocratic and political figures of the day.

After some years of gradually failing health, Grant died of heart disease very suddenly at his residence, The Lodge, Melton Mowbray, on 5 Oct. 1878, and was interred in the church of England burying-ground in that town, his relatives having declined the usual honour of burial in St. Paul's Cathedral.

In the fall of 1878, the `` Popular Telegraph Line '' was established between Manchester and Factory Point by the owners, Paul W. Orvis, Henry Gray, J. N. Hard, and Clark J. Wait.

Alexander Mackenzie, PC ( January 28, 1822 – April 17, 1892 ), a building contractor and newspaper editor, was the second Prime Minister of Canada from November 7, 1873 to October 8, 1878.
