Dialogue now took precedence over " slapstick " in Hollywood comedies: the fast-paced, witty banter of The Front Page ( 1931 ) or It Happened One Night ( 1934 ), the sexual double entrendres of Mae West ( She Done Him Wrong, 1933 ) or the often subversively anarchic nonsense talk of the Marx Brothers ( Duck Soup, 1933 ).

Her first film appearance was in The Golden West ( 1932 ), as a maid ; her second was in the highly successful Mae West film I'm No Angel ( 1933 ), as one of the black maids West camped it up with backstage.

Given that Ruggles had no experience with the genre – his best-known films at that point were the Academy Award-winning Western epic Cimarron ( 1931 ) and the Mae West comedy I'm No Angel ( 1933 ), both more than a decade old – and his Hollywood career was on a downslide, he was an odd choice indeed.

Although Ruggles followed this success with the light comedy No Man of Her Own ( 1932 ) with Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, the comedy I'm No Angel ( 1933 ) with Mae West and Cary Grant, College Humor ( 1933 ) with Bing Crosby, and Bolero ( 1934 ) with George Raft and Carole Lombard, few of his later films were in any way memorable ( an exception is Arizona ).

Noah Beery, Sr. played the flamboyant supporting role of Mae West's bar-owning lover until she leaves him for Cary Grant in She Done Him Wrong ( 1933 ) while his brother Wallace performed in an extremely similar part, as the top-billed lead, the same year in The Bowery.

Critic Janet Maslin of The New York Times wrote that the film was the greatest adaptation of the novel and remarked on Dunst's performance, " The perfect contrast to take-charge Jo comes from Kirsten Dunst's scene-stealing Amy, whose vanity and twinkling mischief make so much more sense coming from an 11-year-old vixen than they did from grown-up Joan Bennett in 1933.
