The province's name was chosen by Queen Victoria when the Colony of British Columbia, i. e. " the Mainland ", became a British colony in 1858.

It refers to the Columbia District, the British name for the territory drained by the Columbia River, in southeastern British Columbia, which was the namesake of the pre-Oregon Treaty Columbia Department of the Hudson's Bay Company.

However, an initial perusal and comparison of some of the famous passages with the same parts of other versions seems to speak well of the efforts of the British Biblical scholars.

There is some doubt as to the origin of the name ; but most probably it is derived from a collection of Alexandrine romances, collected in the 12th century, of which Alexander the Great was the hero, and in which he was represented, somewhat like the British Arthur, as the pride and crown of chivalry.

An early terrace wall supports a precinct in which are a stoa and some remains of temples ; these were excavated by the British School at Athens in 1894, but little was found.
