Consider Phlebas, first published in 1987, is a space opera novel by Scottish writer Iain M. Banks.

Consider Phlebas is Banks's first published science fiction novel set in the Culture, and takes its title from a line in T. S. Eliot's poem The Waste Land.

Consider Phlebas, like most of Banks ' early SF output, was a rewritten version of an earlier book, as he explained in a 1994 interview:

The drone, Jase, in Consider Phlebas, is described as being constructed before the use of " auras ", and refuses to be retrofitted with them, preferring to remain inscrutable.

In some respects Look to Windward serves as a loose sequel to the first Culture novel, Consider Phlebas: the GSV Lasting Damage fought in the Idiran-Culture War, and Ziller specially composes a work to commemorate the arrival of light from a supernova triggered during the war.

Both titles are derived from a couplet in T. S. Eliot's poem, The Waste Land ( which appears both in this work and Consider Phlebas as an epigraph ):

The Idiran-Culture War is a major fictional conflict between the Idiran Empire and the Culture in the midst of which Iain M. Banks ' science fiction novel Consider Phlebas is set.

According to Banks ' appendices to Consider Phlebas, the war began in 1327 AD, and continued for 48 years and one month, resulting in an eventual but total victory for the Culture.

Such fears were also found in many of those who supported the Idiran side during the war, as exemplified by Horza, the protagonist in Consider Phlebas.
