Operated by Iarnród Éireann, the Dublin Suburban Rail network consists of five railway lines serving the Greater Dublin Area and commuter towns such as Drogheda and Dundalk in County Louth.

Some private rural operators exist, such as Halpenny's in Blackrock, County Louth, which was the first private bus operator to run a public service in Ireland, Bus Feda ( Feda O ' Donnell Coaches ), which operates twice daily routes from Ranafast, County Donegal to Galway and back, and Lough Swilly Bus Company.

Under the Local Government Provisional Order Confirmation Act 1976, part of the urban area of Drogheda, which lay in County Meath, was transferred to County Louth on 1 January 1977.

Drogheda (; ; ) is an industrial and port town in County Louth on the east coast of Ireland, north of Dublin.

As the River Boyne divides the dioceses of Armagh and Meath, Drogheda was founded as two separate towns, Drogheda-in-Meath ( for which a charter was granted in 1194 ) and Drogheda-in-Oriel ( or ' Uriel ') as County Louth was then known.

Drogheda continued as a County Borough until the setting up of County Councils, through the enactment of the Local Government ( Ireland ) Act 1898, which saw all of Drogheda, including a large area south of the Boyne, become part of an extended County Louth.

MacNeill was briefly convinced to go along with some sort of action when Mac Diarmada revealed to him that a shipment of German arms was about to land in County Kerry, planned by the IRB in conjunction with Roger Casement ; he was certain that the authorities ' discovery of such a shipment would inevitably lead to suppression of the Volunteers, thus the Volunteers were justified in taking defensive action ( including the originally planned manoeuvres ).

In County Wexford, some 100 Volunteers led by Robert Brennan, Seamus Doyle and J R Etchingham took over Enniscorthy on Thursday 27 April until the following Sunday.

In the west, Liam Mellows led 600 – 700 Volunteers in abortive attacks on several police stations, at Oranmore and Clarinbridge in County Galway.

However, as the war progressed, many Dekalb County families fought for Union cavalries, notably, the First Tennessee and Alabama Independent Vidette Cavalry and the First Alabama Cavalry United States Volunteers.

Doniphan would join a company of Clay County men and command the 1st Missouri Mounted Volunteers Regiment during the Mexican-American War.

He has been Chair of the Board of the County Sports Partnership for Leicestershire since 2004 and also Chairs the National Strategic Partnership for Volunteers in Sport.
