The French National Convention, the first elected Assembly of the First Republic ( 1792 – 1804 ), on the 4th of February 1794, under the leadership of Maximilien Robespierre, abolished slavery by law in France and all its colonies.

Ohio became a state in 1803 and on February 18, 1804, the state legislature passes an act establishing the " Ohio University " in the town of Athens.

Portions of the township have been taken to form Rahway Township ( February 27, 1804 ), Plainfield Township ( April 5, 1847 ), Cranford Township ( March 14, 1871 ), Fanwood Township ( March 6, 1878, now known as Scotch Plains ), Mountainside ( September 25, 1895 ) and Hillside ( April 3, 1913 ).

The city's nickname La ciudad de las flores (" The City of Flowers "), was bestowed by Alexander von Humboldt, who visited the town on 10 February 1804.

Garner Ted Armstrong ( February 9, 1930 – September 15, 2003 ) was an American evangelist and the son of Herbert W. Armstrong, founder of the Worldwide Church of God, at the time a Sabbatarian organization that taught strict observance of seventh-day Sabbath, holy days typically associated with the Jewish faith, and other observances derived from the Old Testament scriptures.
