Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series is inaugurated by On a Pale Horse, which introduces protagonist Zane, who inadvertently assumes the immortal role of psychopomp, Thanatos, through a confluence of circumstances surrounding a noncommittal suicide attempt.

Behold A Pale Horse ( 1964 ) was a post-Spanish Civil War epic based on the book Killing A Mouse on Sunday by Emeric Pressburger and starred Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn and Omar Sharif, but was both a critical and commercial flop ; Zinnemann would later admit that the film " didn't really come together.

It should perhaps be noted that Despard's given name has metamorphosed from " John " in Cards on the Table to " Hugh " in The Pale Horse, not the first time Christie apparently forgot the name of a character.

Even in the one novel in which she appears without Poirot ( The Pale Horse ), Mrs Oliver does not function as a detective, in that she rarely participates in the investigation and contributes only tangentially to the solution.

She is more usually used for comic relief or to provide a deus ex machina through her intuitive or sudden insights, a function that is especially apparent in Third Girl, in which she furnishes Poirot with virtually every important clue, or in The Pale Horse, where she inadvertently helps the investigators to determine the type of poison used to kill the murder victims, saving the life of another character.

In the BBC Radio 4 plays, Ariadne Oliver has been played by Stephanie Cole ( Cards on the Table and The Pale Horse ), and by Julia McKenzie ( Mrs McGinty's Dead, Dead Man's Folly and Elephants Can Remember ).

Mrs Oliver now contacts Mark with a key connection that she has made: another victim of the Pale Horse ( Mary Delafontaine ) has lost her hair during her illness.

The origins and justification of the name " Pestilence " as a distinct Horseman are unclear, though some translations of the Bible do mention " plague " ( e. g. the NIV ) or " pestilence " ( e. g. the RSV ) in connection with the fourth, Pale horse ( see above ).
