Four major epidemics have occurred in recent history: one from 1896 – 1906 primarily in Uganda and the Congo Basin, two epidemics in 1920 and 1970 in several African countries, and a recent 2008 epidemic in Uganda.

There are also many innocent Hutu who remain in the forests of eastern Congo, particularly Rutshuru, Masisi and Bukavu, who have been misinformed by rebel forces that they will be killed upon return to Rwanda.

However, as Gerhard Kubik points out, performers of African popular music do not necessarily perceive these progressions in the same way: " The harmonic cycle of C-F-G-F prominent in Congo / Zaire popular music simply cannot be defined as a progression from tonic to subdominant to dominant and back to subdominant ( on which it ends ) because in the performer ’ s appreciation they are of equal status, and not in any hierarchical order as in Western music.

They are those languages west of Kru which have the noun-class systems characteristic of the Niger – Congo family ; in this they are distinguished from their Mande neighbors, which do not.

In 1906, Austin and Maud decided to try their luck at diamond mining in the Congo of Central Africa, where they lived for another six years.

A massive investigation of the characteristics of in-migrants and prospective out-migrants in Ruanda-Urundi is being carried on by J. J. Maquet, former Director of the Social Science branch of IRSAC, now a professor at l'Universite Officielle Du Congo Belge et Du Ruanda-Urundi.

The Belgian government decided to act, and on July 10 dispatched paratroops to the Congo.

Meanwhile Russia took every opportunity to meddle in the Congo, sending Lumumba equipment for his `` wars '', dispatching `` technicians '' and even threatening, on occasion, to intervene openly.

Fishing is carried on extensively along the rivers, but most of the catch is sold or bartered on the Democratic Republic of the Congo ( DRC ) side of the Ubangi River.

Most timber is shipped down the Ubangi and Zaire rivers and then on the Congo railway to the Atlantic.

At the end of the Conference on 27 January 1960 it was announced that elections would be held in the Congo on 22 May 1960, and full independence granted on 30 June 1960.

The Congo was indeed granted its independence on 30 June 1960, adopting the name " Republic of the Congo " ( République du Congo ).

A constitution was approved by voters and on 30 July 2006 the Congo held its first multi-party elections since independence in 1960.

The country's only outlet to the Atlantic Ocean is a narrow strip of land on the north bank of the Congo River.

The Democratic Republic of Congo also possesses 50 percent of Africa ’ s forests and a river system that could provide hydro-electric power to the entire continent, according to a United Nations report on the country ’ s strategic significance and its potential role as an economic power in central Africa.

The younger Kabila continued with his father's Transitional Parliament, but overhauled his entire cabinet, replacing it with a group of technocrats, with the stated aim of putting the country back on the track of development, and coming to a decisive end of the Second Congo War.
