Among caracaras, it is second in size only to the Southern Caracara.

Adults can be separated from the similar Southern Caracara by their less extensive and more spotty barring to the chest, more uniform blackish scapulars ( brownish and often lightly mottled / barred in Southern ), and blackish lower back ( pale with dark barring in Southern ).

It was, together with the closely related Crested and Southern Caracara, formerly placed in the genus Polyborus.

One species, the northern fur seal ( Callorhinus ursinus ) inhabits the North Pacific, while seven species in the Arctocephalus genus are found primarily in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Antarctic minke whale inhabits all oceans in the Southern Hemisphere.

Soliga, also spelled Sholaga is a tribe in India that inhabits the Biligirirangan and associated hill ranges in Southern Karnataka, mostly in Chamarajanagar District and Erode district of Tamil Nadu.

Southern fire ant shares its range ( the area it inhabits ) with the red imported fire ant ( S. invicta ), the golden fire ant ( S. aurea ) and S. amblychila.

The sable antelope ( Hippotragus niger ) is an antelope which inhabits wooded savannah in East Africa south of Kenya, and in Southern Africa.

Prosopis nigra ( synonym Prosopis algarrobilla ) is a South American leguminous tree species that inhabits the Gran Chaco ecoregion ( in particular, the transition zone between the Wet Chaco and the Southern Chaco ), in Argentina and Paraguay.

There are a number of insular species, including the Clarion Wren and Socorro Wren from the Revillagigedo Islands in the Pacific Ocean, and the Cobb's Wren in the Falkland Islands, but few Caribbean islands have a species of wren, with only the Southern House Wren in the Lesser Antilles, the Cozumel Wren of Cozumel Island, and the highly restricted Zapata Wren in a single swamp in Cuba.

The Black-necked Swan breeds in Chilean Southern Zone, Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and on the Falkland Islands.

It is planted in many temperate parts of the Southern Hemisphere, most commonly in New Zealand and on the Falkland Islands.

The ship reached the Chilean port of Valparaíso, the headquarters of the Pacific station, on after a cruise that incorporated visits to Rio de Janeiro and the Falkland Islands, and a stormy passage in the Southern Ocean.

Species for which the group is an important breeding site include Falkland Steamer Ducks ( 245 pairs ), Gentoo Penguins ( 2850 pairs ), Magellanic Penguins ( 2000 pairs ), and Southern Giant Petrels ( 300 pairs ).

It is a significant breeding site for for a variety of seabirds and other waterbirds including Falkland Steamer Ducks, Ruddy-headed Geese, Gentoo Penguins ( 2800 pairs ), Southern Rockhopper Penguins ( 480 pairs ), Magellanic Penguins, Southern Giant-petrels ( 25 pairs ) and Sooty Shearwaters.

Livingston is situated in the Southern Ocean to the northwest of Cape Roquemaurel on the Antarctic mainland, to the south-southeast of Cape Horn in South America, to the southeast of the Diego Ramirez Islands ( the southernmost land of South America ), due south of the Falkland Islands, to the southwest of South Georgia Island, and from the South Pole.

It can be found in the Southern part of South America ; in Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, and the Falkland Islands.
