The difference was remarked upon in dialog between characters in " Trials and Tribble-ations ", an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine when modern-era characters travel back in time to the days of Kirk and Spock ( and via then-brand new CGI techniques, appear within the TOS episode " The Trouble With Tribbles ", frequently coming into contact with the Enterprise crew ).

Notable females include Sela ( Tasha Yar's daughter ), Caithlin Dar ( Star Trek V: The Final Frontier ), Donatra ( Star Trek Nemesis ), Taris, and Toreth ( TNG: " Contagion " and " Face of the Enemy ", both played by Carolyn Seymour ) and the Romulan Commander in the TOS episode " The Enterprise Incident ," who is never referred to by name ( in Star Trek CCG and some noncanon novels, she is called " Commander Liviana Charvanek ").

The term " Starfleet Command " is first used in TOS episode " Court Martial ".

Already in TOS the USS Enterprise and other ships have a mixed-species crew, although this does not appear to be an absolute rule ; the USS Intrepid is shown with an all-Vulcan crew in the episode " The Immunity Syndrome ".

The TOS episode " Obsession " however, appears to indicate that the Transporters maximum range, during that time period in Star Trek history, is actually around 30, 000 kilometers.

This is explained in the TOS episode, " Day of the Dove ".

However, there are apparently safeguards in place to prevent people from being beamed into hostile environments such as under water and into lava pits, although it is possible to override this safety feature ; for example, in the TOS episode " And the Children Shall Lead ", two security guards are beamed into open space.

For special effects reasons, in TOS, people generally appear immobilized during transport, with the exception of Kirk in the episode " That Which Survives ".

In at least one case ( TOS episode ' A Private Little War '), where two different factions of one race were at war with each other, the Prime Directive had been interpreted to mean that neither side could have an advantage ( i. e. that there had to be a balance of power ).

Compounding matters is that in the TOS episode " The Omega Glory ," Kirk states, " A star captain's most solemn oath is that he will give his life, even his entire crew, rather than violate the Prime Directive ," and yet he seemingly violates the Prime Directive as " the only way to save my ship " in " A Taste of Armageddon " and no explanation for the Federation Ambassador trying to mediate between Eminiar VII and Vendikar ( neither of which are Federation members ) regardless of their wishes on the matter is given.

In the Star Trek original series ( TOS ) episode " All Our Yesterdays ", Spock willingly consumes meat ; partly due to the effects of time-travel 5, 000 years into the past, and partly because he reasons there is no other suitable food available given the harsh, ice-age climate in which they are trapped.

In a later TOS episode " Requiem for Methuselah ", Spock specifically requests a Terran brandy after Dr. McCoy, while serving himself and Captain Kirk, observes that he had no expectation that Spock would be joining them in a drink for fear that the alcohol would affect his logic faculties.

In " non-canon " Trek-related literature, such as the novelization of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Vulcans are depicted as immune to the effects of alcohol ( though in the TOS episode " The Naked Time " a strange affliction infects the crew, that has much the same effect as alcohol, and Spock is also affected and becomes emotional, and even starts to cry ).

The other option is extreme shock ; in the TOS episode " Amok Time ", Spock believed he had killed James T. Kirk, his " best friend ", thus providing sufficient shock to nullify the effects of pon farr.

In the TOS episode " This Side of Paradise ", Leila Kalomi hints at having had a special relationship with Spock some six years earlier, though Spock's remark that he hoped his half-human blood would see him " spared " the agony of pon farr in the episode Amok Time suggests that their relationship was more casual.

Some Vulcans, such as T ' Pol, Sarek ( in his later years, due to a rare disease which can affect Vulcans over the age of 200 years ), and Soval, carry their emotions close to the surface, and are prone to emotional outbursts, even without outside influences or illness ; T ' Pau certainly displayed restrained but definite emotions in the TOS episode " Amok Time ", including suspicion of the Human visitors followed by admiration and approval of their friendship for Spock, and contempt for Spock's humanity.

Mind melds have been used to erase memories, as Spock performed on James T. Kirk in the TOS episode " Requiem for Methuselah.

In the TOS episode " Mirror, Mirror ," Spock of the Mirror Universe performed a forced mind meld on Dr. Leonard McCoy in order to learn what McCoy was keeping secret.

For example, in the TOS episode " A Taste of Armageddon ," Spock was once able to induce uncertainty in the mind of a prison guard on Eminiar VII, and in the episode " The Devil in the Dark ," he was able to perform a limited mind meld with a horta without actually making physical contact with the being.

After a false start involving Berman which would have set the film in a time period after the events of Enterprise but before TOS, Paramount recruited a new producing and writing team, which ultimately led to the release of a new Star Trek film in May 2009.

In Gene Roddenberry's original Star Trek pitch, the starship is described as a " United Space Ship ," and in two episodes of the original series ( TOS ), Kirk refers to the " United Space Ship Enterprise ".

They also introduced two new series, Star Trek: Early Voyages which dealt with Captain Pike's adventures as captain of the Enterprise ( as depicted in the rejected TOS pilot " The Cage ") and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy which dealt with a group of cadets, including Deep Space Nine's Ferengi, Nog.

Formerly a janitor and inventor for Gizmonic Institute (" just another face in a red jumpsuit ", in reference to Star Trek TOS, where red-clad characters were expendable statists often killed ), Joel was launched into space by his boss Dr. Clayton Forrester and coworker Dr. Laurence Erhardt-later replaced by TV's Frank-as part of an experiment to see which bad movies were capable of destroying the human mind.

Additional maneuvers that may be abnormal in TOS include the " stick em up hand raise " for up to 3 – 5 minutes, which involves holding both hands at right angles over the head bent at the elbows, with or without opening and closing of the fingers ( a positive test occurs when the affected hand quickly becomes paler than the unaffected because of compromised blood supply ), and the " compression test ", when exerting pressure between the clavicle and medial humeral head causes radiation of pain and / or numbness into the affected arm.

Under the pen name Michael Richards, Fontana wrote " That Which Survives " and " The Way to Eden ", both from the third season of TOS.

The story credit was shared by John D. F. Black, who had written " The Naked Time ", the TOS episode to which " Naked Now " was an homage.

An episode of the Internet-based fan-made Star Trek series Star Trek: New Voyages, " To Serve All My Days ", was also written by Fontana and features a guest appearance by Walter Koenig reprising his role of Pavel Chekov in TOS.

This era saw disputes between authors and the Star Trek production office – specifically Roddenberry's " assistant ", Richard Arnold – with many novels being rejected for not focusing directly on the main TOS cast.

Commodore Robert April is mentioned in the computer game Star Trek: Legacy during the early part of the TOS campaign, where he is still in Starfleet service in 2270.

In 2009, a German film collector discovered a print of it and brought it to the attention of CBS / Paramount, which then released it under the title " Where No Fan Has Gone Before "-The Restored, Unaired Alternate Pilot Episode as part of the TOS season 3 box set on Blu-ray ; it has not yet been released on DVD.

This Side of Paradise was digitally re-mastered in 2006, and this version was first broadcast on July 28, 2007, as part of the remastered 40th Anniversary restoration of the original series ( TOS ).
