The history of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is typically divided into three broad time periods: ( 1 ) the early history during the lifetime of Joseph Smith, Jr. which is in common with all Latter Day Saint movement churches, ( 2 ) a " pioneer era " under the leadership of Brigham Young and his 19th century successors, and ( 3 ) a modern era beginning around the turn of the 20th century as Utah achieved statehood.

The early history of the LDS Church is shared with other denominations of the Latter Day Saint movement, who all regard Joseph Smith, Jr. as the founder of their religious tradition.

Some early Latter Day Saints settled west of Independence, inside what are now the boundaries of Kansas City itself.

Unlike other Latter Day Saint movement traditions ( such as the Community of Christ ), it also accepts the Pearl of Great Price as part of its scriptural canon, and has a history of teaching eternal marriage, eternal progression, and plural marriage ( although the LDS Church had abandoned that practice by the early 20th century ).

In 1833, early in the Latter Day Saint movement, its founder Joseph Smith, Jr. taught that human souls are co-eternal with God the Father just as Jesus is co-eternal with God the Father, " Man was also in the beginning with God.

Latter Day Saint movement founder Joseph Smith, Jr. lived in Manchester in the 1820s on the border with Palmyra and several events in the early history of the movement occurred in Ontario County.

* Lyman R. Sherman ( 1804 – 1839 ), an early leader in the Latter Day Saint movement

* Joseph Toronto ( 1818 – 1893 ), early Latter Day Saint convert, Italian missionary, and Mormon pioneer

According to the Book of Mormon, that scripture of the Latter Day Saint movement was originally written in reformed Egyptian characters on plates of " ore " by prophets living in the Western Hemisphere from perhaps as early as 2600 BC until as late as AD 421.

* Jason W. Briggs ( 1821 – 1899 ), a leader in the early history of the Latter Day Saint movement

* Parley P. Pratt ( 1807 – 1857 ), born in Burlington, was an early leader of the Latter Day Saint movement whose writings became a significant early nineteenth-century exposition of the Latter Day Saint faith.

Kirtland is famous for being the early headquarters of the Latter Day Saint movement.

* George A. Smith ( 1817 – 1875 ), early member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

, there are at least twelve early Latter Day Saints who, based on historical documents and circumstantial evidence, have been identified as potential Smith offspring stemming from plural marriages.

LDS historian George D. Smith studied 153 men who took plural wives in the early years of the Latter Day Saint movement, and found that two of the girls were thirteen years old, 13 girls were fourteen years old, 21 were fifteen years old, and 53 were sixteen years old.

While the Torah may have been considered canon by Israel as early as the 5th century BCE and the Former and Latter Prophets were canonized by the 2nd century BCE, the Ketuvim was not a fixed canon until the 2nd century of the Common Era.

Many other events in the early history of the Latter Day Saint movement took place in the village and town.

Though Smith had described other visions, the First Vision was essentially unknown to early Latter Day Saints ; Smith's experience did not become important in the Latter Day Saint movement until the early-20th century, when it became the embodiment of the Latter Day Saint restoration.

The early chapters, set in Jerusalem, discuss Jesus ' Resurrection and Great Commission, his Ascension with a prophecy to return, the start of the Twelve Apostles ' ministry, and the Day of Pentecost.

Among the tracks he recorded was an early version of " That'll Be The Day ", which took its title from a line that John Wayne's character says repeatedly in the 1956 film The Searchers.

Their third and final album, That'll Be the Day, was put together from early recordings and was released in April.

Justin Martyr, also known as just Saint Justin ( AD 100 – ca. 165 ), was an early Christian apologist, and is regarded as the foremost interpreter of the theory of the Logos in the 2nd century.

According to the Life of Saint Gildas, written in the early 12th century by Caradoc of Llancarfan, Arthur is said to have killed Gildas ' brother Hueil and to have rescued his wife Gwenhwyfar from Glastonbury.
