A still more significant variation in the ancient historical account appears in the writing of Plutarch in the late 1st – early 2nd century AD :" Athens was torn by recurrent conflict about the constitution.

When Pausanias visited Argos in the 2nd century CE, he related the succession of Danaus to the throne, judged by the Argives, who " from the earliest times ... have loved freedom and self-government, and they limited to the utmost the authority of their kings :"

For example, in the 4th century, Marcellus of Ancyra, who taught the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were one person ( hypostasis ), said in his On the Holy Church, 9 :" Now with the heresy of the Ariomaniacs, which has corrupted the Church of God ... These then teach three hypostases, just as Valentinus the heresiarch first invented in the book entitled by him ' On the Three Natures '.
