He convinced Digital Equipment Corporation ( DEC ), Intel, and Xerox to work together to promote Ethernet as a standard.

Intel Corporation is the inventor and the biggest supplier of IA-32 processors.

Robert Norton Noyce ( December 12, 1927 – June 3, 1990 ), nicknamed " the Mayor of Silicon Valley ", co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957 and Intel Corporation in 1968.

Servers use those processors and other readily available non-x86 processor choices, including the Sun Microsystems UltraSPARC, Fujitsu SPARC64 III and later, SGI MIPS, Intel Itanium, Hewlett Packard PA-RISC, Hewlett-Packard ( merged with Compaq which acquired first Digital Equipment Corporation ) DEC Alpha, IBM POWER and Apple Computer PowerPC ( specifically G4 and G5 series, as well as earlier PowerPC 604 and 604e series ) processors.

Intel Corporation saw the massive potential of the invention and introduced the first commercial NOR type flash chip in 1988.

In the same year, it was also the world's fourth-largest manufacturer of semiconductors by revenues ( after Intel Corporation, Samsung Electronics and Texas Instruments ).

Version 2. 0 also provided a full 32-bit API, offered smooth multitasking and could take advantage of the 4 gigabytes of address space provided by the Intel 80386.

To expand PCs beyond one megabyte, Lotus, Intel, and Microsoft jointly created expanded memory ( EMS ), a bank-switching scheme to allow more memory provided by add-in hardware, and accessed by a set of four 16-Kilobyte " windows " inside the 20-bit addressing.

This may have been electrically the same as or similar to the XT bus ; it most certainly had some similarities since both essentially exposed the 8088 CPU's address and data buses, with some buffering and latching, the addition of interrupts and DMA provided by Intel add-on chips, and a few system fault detection lines ( Power Good, Memory Check, I / O Channel Check ).

The Lasi ASIC provided an integrated NCR 53C710 SCSI controller, an Intel Apricot 10 Mbit Ethernet interface, CD-quality sound, PS / 2 keyboard and mouse, a serial and a parallel port.

In the mid 2000s, both Intel and AMD added hardware support to their processors making virtualization software simpler, and later hardware changes provided substantial speed improvements.

Higher-end workstations still use more sophisticated CPUs such as the modern iterations of the Intel Xeon, AMD Opteron, IBM POWER, or Sun UltraSPARC CPUs, and typically run a variant of Unix, often allowing these machines to still focus on one area of expertise extensively.

Among the acquisitions were Cirrus Logic Inc's PicoPower business, for its specialised expertise in small form factor devices ; Mediamatics Inc, which makes multimedia connectivity products ; Future Integrated Systems Inc, a PC graphics company ; Gulbransen Inc, a digital audio technology maker ; ComCore Semiconductor Inc, a maker of digital signal processing for LANs ; Cyrix, the maker of Intel x86 clones.
