Inverlochy, aluminium plant, Corpach and Loch Eil

Originally based on the still-existent village of Inverlochy, the town lies at the southern end of the Great Glen, on the shores of Loch Linnhe and Loch Eil.

* February 2 – Battle of Inverlochy: The Covenanters are defeated by Montrose.

Their victory at Inverlochy gave the Royalists control over the western Highlands and attracted other clans and noblemen to their cause.

The nearby settlement of Inverlochy was the main settlement in the area before the building of the fort, and was also site of the Battle of Inverlochy.

Leaving his brother Edward in command in Galloway, Bruce travelled north, capturing Inverlochy and Urquhart Castles, burning Inverness Castle and Nairn to the ground, then unsuccessfully threatening Elgin.

The Islesmen rose again in September 1431 and inflicted two important defeats on the king's men — Mar's army was beaten at Inverlochy and Angus Moray ’ s in a fierce battle near Tongue in Caithness.

Immediately afterwards five hundred men were to land on the west coast, seize Fort William or Inverlochy, and thus prevent the access of any military force from the south to the central Highlands.

At Tippermuir and Aberdeen he routed Covenanting levies ; at Inverlochy he crushed the Campbells, at Auldearn, Alford and Kilsyth his victories were obtained over well-led and disciplined armies.

His strategy at Inverlochy, his tactics at Aberdeen, Auldearn and Kilsyth furnished models of the military art, but above all his daring and constancy marked him out as one of the greatest soldiers of the war.

On 2 February 1645, while following Montrose northwards, Argyll was surprised by him at Inverlochy.

However, he certainly intended to fight the Scottish army, more especially as after the Covenanter's defeat at the Scottish Battle of Inverlochy, the Scottish army in England had been called upon to detach a large force to deal with Montrose.

The Battle of Inverlochy ( February 2, 1645 ) was a battle of the Scottish Civil War in which Montrose routed the pursuing forces of the Marquess of Argyll.

At Glencoe the army crossed the high passes into Glen Nevis, moved around the north slopes of Ben Nevis, circumventing Inverlochy Castle, and then continued up the Great Glen, arriving at Kilcummin to re-supply.

Montrose was also aware that Argyll, with a force of 3000 men, was pursuing him and was only thirty miles behind at Inverlochy.

Auchinbreck lined up the covenanters in front of Inverlochy castle, which he reinforced with 200 musketeers to protect his left flank.

Unlike at Tippermuir and Aberdeen, where Montrose had annihilated hastily conscripted and poorly trained militias, the troops he faced at Inverlochy were veterans of the war in England.

The small garrison in Inverlochy castle surrendered without a fight.

In many respects, the Battle of Inverlochy was as much part of the clan war between these two deadly enemies and their allies as it was part of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, and that is how it was portrayed in Gaelic folklore.

In 1690 he founded Fort William at Inverlochy.

In February 1645, the Campbells met the Royalist and Highland force at the battle of Inverlochy, close to Ben Nevis in Lochaber.

He died at his home at Slaghtfreedan Lodge, Cookstown, County Tyrone, on 25 March 1956 and was buried with full military honours on 28 March at Claggan Presbyterian cemetery in Cookstown.

Near Dunbeg is Kilvickadownig, home to other archeologial ruins, including examples of the beehive house and the grave of Caol or Cháil Mic Crimthainn, the last to die in the Battle of Ventry from the well-known Fenian Cycle myths.

In Seán Ó Seanacháin's song An Buachaill Caol Dubh, Aoibheal appears to a young couple and offers the man a hundred Fairy servants if he will renounce his mortal lover in exchange for the bed of Aoibheal herself.

In this poem Seán Ó Seanacháin likens the grip that drink ( An Buachaill Caol Dubh-the dark slender lad-probably a whiskey bottle ) has on him to the love that a young man would have for him.

Caol Ila, on the northern side of the island, across from Jura, also produces a strongly peated whisky.

Kyle of Lochalsh ( from the Scottish Gaelic Caol Loch Aillse, " strait of the foaming loch ") is a village on the northwest coast of Scotland, 63 miles ( 100 km ) west of Inverness.
