Isaias Afewerki ( Tigrinya: ኢሳይያስ ኣፈወርቅ ; born February 2, 1946 ), is the first President of Eritrea, a position he has held since 1993.

In 1975, Isaias became chairman of the EPLF military committee.

The EPLF under Isaias Afwerki executed an offensive against the ELF in a bid to protect the flanks of the Front under tremendous pressure from a resurgent Ethiopia.

Isaias Afwerki was declared the first head of state.

Isaias Afewerki has therefore been criticised for failing to implement democratic reforms.

Isaias Afwerki is quoted as saying: " a one-party system wills neither enhances national security or stability nor accelerates economic development.
