Béla Julesz ( February 19, 1928 – December 31, 2003 ) was a visual neuroscientist and experimental psychologist in the fields of visual and auditory perception.

Julesz was the originator of random dot stereograms which led to the creation of autostereograms.

Béla Julesz was born in Budapest, Hungary, on February 19, 1928.

The random-dot stereogram technique, already known since 1919, was much used by Dr. Béla Julesz and it, along with additional research, lead to publication of an influential book detailing his theories and work on the basis of human stereo vision entitled Foundations of Cyclopean Perception.

The Stuttgart exhibit featured work by Georg Nees ; the New York exhibit featured work by Bela Julesz and A. Michael Noll.

Julesz, who is well known for his invention of the random dot stereogram, used a computer to create a stereo pair of random-dot images that, when viewed under a stereoscope, caused the brain to see 3-dimensional shapes.

Julesz whimsically called the square a Cyclopean image after the mythical Cyclops who had only one eye.

Béla Julesz authored or collaborated on more than 200 publications, including Foundations of Cyclopean Perception ( 1971 ).

In 1956, Julesz joined the renowned Bell Laboratories, where he headed the Sensory and Perceptual Processes Department ( 1964 – 1982 ), then the Visual Perception Research Department ( 1983 – 1989 ).

In 1959, Bela Julesz, a vision scientist, psychologist and MacArthur Fellow, invented the random dot stereogram while working at Bell Laboratories on recognizing camouflaged objects from aerial pictures taken by spy planes.

Shortly after earning his PhD at the University of Keele ( 1970 ), Dr. Tyler became a Research Fellow at Bell Labs ( in 1974-75 ), where he worked with Bela Julesz, a vision scientist, psychologist and MacArthur Fellow.

In 1959, Julesz created the random-dot stereogram using pairs of random dot patterns that were identical except for slight differences in the horizontal position of a subset of dots.

Dr. Julesz decided to try mapping the numbers into images and using the pattern-detecting capabilities of the human brain to look for a lack of randomness.

In 1979, Christopher Tyler of Smith-Kettlewell Institute, a student of Julesz and a visual psychophysicist, combined the theories behind single-image wallpaper stereograms and random-dot stereograms ( the work of Julesz and Schilling ) to create the first black-and-white " random-dot autostereogram " ( also known as single-image random-dot stereogram ) with the assistance of computer programmer Maureen Clarke using Apple II and BASIC.

Julesz used a computer to create a stereo pair of random-dot images which, when viewed under a stereoscope, caused the brain to see 3D shapes.

Japanese designer Masayuki Ito, following Julesz, created a single image stereogram in 1970 and Swiss painter Alfons Schilling created a handmade single-image stereogram in 1974, after creating more than one viewer and meeting with Julesz.

Julesz referred to this, whimsically, as cyclopean vision, after the mythical Cyclops, a creature with a single eye in its forehead instead of the usual two.

Later, Christopher Tyler, a former student of Julesz, used the principles of random-dot stereograms to invent autostereograms, which create the same effect using a single image instead of two.

Julesz made important contributions to the theory of human visual perception of texture.

Julesz became professor emeritus in 1999, and remained the director of the lab until his death on December 31, 2003.

Dr. Julesz emigrated from Hungary to the United States following the 1956 Soviet invasion.

Over 100 years later, Dr. Julesz noticed that two identical random images similar to what he had produced in his previously mentioned project, when viewed through a stereoscope, appeared as if they were projected onto a uniform flat surface.
