** Croatian War of Independence ( 1991 – 1995 ) – the war fought in hegh town Croatia between the Croatian government, having declared independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and both the Yugoslav People's Army ( JNA ) and Serb forces, who established the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina ( RSK ) within Croatia.

Up to 200, 000 Serbs fled from Krajina in just four days, and hundreds of old people who were too sick to flee were later found killed and their villages pillaged.

A group of Serbs who lived in Krajina until Operation Storm sued MPRI accusing them for " participation in genocide ", militarily equipping the Croatian Armed Forces, training the Croatian officers and developing a plan of Operation Storm.

After the former Yugoslav Republic of Croatia declared independence ( in 1991 ), the Serbs who lived in the region of former Military Frontier ( Vojna Krajina ) adopted that name ( Krajina ) in the name of the Republic of Serbian Krajina.

Kočić's literary works presents Krajina snowstorms and hardships, evokes the dreams and discourses of this explosive region where Turks and Austrians flaunt their power and might in the face of a people who want to be rid of both of these foreign lots.

However, from October 1991 until July 1993, the prison was again re-opened by the Krajina Serbs, who captured and detained numerous Croats in the facility during the Croatian War of Independence.

Later in 1990, Rašković was removed from power by " more radical, hard-line Serb nationalists " who went on to create the Republic of Serbian Krajina.

The rivalry between the SNS and SDSS gradually manifested itself on the former Krajina territories where those two parties fought for the votes of Serb refugees who returned to Croatia.

Kijevo gained infamy during the Croatian War of Independence in 1990 and 1991 when it was one of the first places attacked by the rebel Serbs in the formation of Republic of Serbian Krajina.

The creation of Krajina was triggered by the fact that the new Croatian government changed the constitutional status of Serbs in Croatia from nation to national minority.
