The Norse discovery was documented in the 13th century Icelandic Sagas and was corroborated by recent L ' Anse aux Meadows archeological evidence.

There is speculation that Viking explorers discovered and settled in the Vinland region around 1000 AD, which is when the L ' Anse aux Meadows settlement in Newfoundland and Labrador has been dated, and it is possible that further exploration was made into the present-day Maritimes and northeastern United States.

In the 8th century, North Germanic seamen launched a massive expansion, founding important states in Eastern Europe and northern France, while colonizing the Atlantic as far as North America by around 1000 AD ( L ' Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada ).

In 1960 archaeological evidence of the only known Norse settlement in North America ( outside of Greenland ) was found at L ' Anse aux Meadows on the northern tip of the island of Newfoundland, in what is now the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

New findings from L ' Anse Aux Meadows show that these vinber were seen by the Norse.

One of the few reasonably consistent pieces of information is that exploration voyages from the main base sailed down both the east and west coasts of the land ; this was one of the factors which helped archaeologists locate the site at L ' Anse Aux Meadows, at the tip of Newfoundland's long northern peninsula.

In 1960 a Viking settlement was discovered by Helge and Anne Stine Ingstad at that exact spot, L ' Anse aux Meadows in northern Newfoundland, and excavated during the 1960s and 1970s.

Many wooden objects were found at L ' Anse Aux Meadows, and radiocarbon dating confirms the site's occupation as being confined to a short period around 1000 CE.

Based on such interpretations and archaeological evidence, it is now generally accepted that L ' Anse Aux Meadows was the main base of the Norse explorers, but the southernmost limit of the Norse exploration remains a subject of intense speculation.

Three butternuts were a further important find at L ' Anse Aux Meadows: another species which grows only as far north as the St. Lawrence.

As the Norse were searching for lumber, a material that was needed in Greenland, they found trees covered with vitis riparia south of L ' Anse aux Meadows and called them vinviðir.

Here the explorers land and establish a base which can plausibly be matched to L ' Anse Aux Meadows, except that the winter is described as mild, not freezing.

After sailing a little farther, the expedition lands at an inlet next to an area of strong currents ( Straumsfjord ), with an island just offshore ( Straumsey ) – a location which can plausibly be matched to L ' Anse Aux Meadows – and makes camp.

Viking navigators opened the road to new lands to the north, west and east, resulting in the foundation of independent settlements in the Shetland, Orkney, and Faroe Islands ; Iceland ; Greenland ; and L ' Anse aux Meadows, a short-lived settlement in Newfoundland, circa 1000 A. D.

Vikings under Leif Eriksson, heir to Erik the Red, reached North America, and set up a short-lived settlement in present-day L ' Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

The Vikings also launched an unsuccessful attempt at colonizing an area they called Vinland, which is probably at a site now known as L ' Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland and Labrador, on the eastern coastline of Canada.

However, L ' Anse aux Meadows in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador is much older.

There were a number of stone pillars off the island coasts called " L ' anse aux Soldats " that have been eroded away and disappeared in the 1970s.

The Vinland Map first came to light in 1957 ( three years before the discovery of the Norse site at L ' Anse aux Meadows in 1960 ), bound in a slim volume with a short medieval text called the Hystoria Tartarorum ( usually called in English the Tartar Relation ), and was unsuccessfully offered to the British Museum by London book dealer Irving Davis on behalf of a Spanish-Italian dealer named Enzo Ferrajoli de Ry.
