In 1763, a French merchant and former soldier of France named Pierre Laclède, along with his fourteen year old lieutenant Auguste Chouteau and a crew of 30, set out from New Orleans to explore the Illinois Country and establish a fur trading post.

Pierre Laclède or Pierre Laclède Liguest ( Bedous, Béarn, France, 22 November 1729 – died near the mouth of Arkansas River, 20 June 1778 ) was a French fur trader who, with his young assistant and " stepson " Auguste Chouteau, founded St. Louis, Missouri, in 1764.

Laclède returned to St. Louis in April 1764 with a design for the town, where Chouteau was overseeing clearing of the land.

The county was organized February 24, 1849, and was named after Pierre Laclède, founder of St. Louis.

However, due to slow transit times, word of the Treaty of Fontainebleau did not arrive in Louisiana until 1765 ; in that period, the French governor of Louisiana granted a trade monopoly over Missouri to New Orleans merchant Gilbert Antoine de St. Maxent and his partner, Pierre Laclède.

Pierre Laclède named the settlement St. Louis in honor of the patron saint of the king of France.

In 1764, Laclède chose the first elevated site below the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, along the terraced bluffs that formed the west bank of the Mississippi River, north of the River des Peres and south of the Missouri River.

Laclède was sponsored by the New Orleans merchant Gilbert Antoine Maxent in 1763 to construct a trading post near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers.
