His nephew, R. Lawton Jordan, served as Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs during Bill Clinton's administration.

He served at Forts Walla Walla and Lawton, in Washington state, commanding the latter post in 1901-1902.

In 1970 he ran for the U. S. Senate, but was defeated in the Democratic primary runoff by relatively little known state senator Lawton Chiles, who went on to win the U. S. Senate seat ( served 1971-1989 ), and later himself became Governor ( 1991 – 1998 ).

Henry Ware Lawton ( March 17, 1843 – December 19, 1899 ) was a highly respected U. S. Army officer who served with distinction in the Civil War, the Apache Wars, the Spanish-American War and was the only U. S. general officer to be killed during the Philippine-American War.

He was not a candidate for renomination in 1926, having become a candidate for United States Senator ; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1926 ; reelected in 1932, 1938 and 1944 and served from March 4, 1927, to January 3, 1951 ; unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1950 ; chairman, Committee on Indian Affairs ( Seventy-fourth through Seventy-seventh Congresses ), Committee on Agriculture and Forestry ( Seventy-eighth, Seventy-ninth and Eighty-first Congresses ), Committee on Indian Affairs ( Seventy-eighth Congress ); engaged in the practice of law in Washington, D. C., until August 1957 ; returned to Lawton, Oklahoma, where he died September 19, 1965 ; interment in Highland Cemetery.

Today, the Comanche Nation Comanche tribal enrollment numbers 15, 191 with approximately 7, 763 members residing in the Lawton – Fort Sill and surrounding areas of Southwest Oklahoma.

After siding with the Confederacy, acting as scouts for the Texas Rangers, the Tonkawa Massacre, occurring near Lawton, Oklahoma killed about ½ of the tribe.
