The Shakers is a religious sect founded in eighteenth-century England upon the teachings of Ann Lee.

Shaping Edwin ’ s ambitious journey in the world of the theater is his love of three women: the beautiful, strong-minded Julia Scarlet, whom he first meets in Ann Arbor ; the emotionally fragile and haunting Jessamy Lee, and the very private and mysterious leading lady Adelina Kane, idol of the American stage.

The cast included both stage performers: Sally Ann Howes and George Lee Andrews as Desiree and Frederick and opera regular Regina Resnik as Madame Armfeldt ( in 1991 ).

Founded upon the teachings of Ann Lee, Shakers today are mostly known for their cultural contributions ( especially their style of music and furniture ), and their model of equality of the sexes, which they institutionalized in their society in the 1780s.

Novelist John Fowles wrote in 1985 A Maggot, a postmodern historical novel culminating in the birth of Ann Lee, and describing early Shakers in England.

The lifestyle and philosophy of the Shakers and their matriarch Ann Lee are recurring themes in her work.

Believers have continually looked at the story of Ann Lee as a cornerstone of the theological architecture that has distinguished their church from other American religious groups.

Shaker theology, its manifestation in material artifacts such as furniture and oval boxes, and the Ann Lee story draw the attention of outsiders either fascinated or repulsed by them.
