In some ways, Allori is the last of the line of prominent Florentine painters, of generally undiluted Tuscan artistic heritage: Andrea del Sarto worked with Fra Bartolomeo ( as well as Leonardo da Vinci ), Pontormo briefly worked under Andrea, and trained Bronzino, who trained Allori.

Although observations of some aerodynamic effects such as wind resistance ( e. g. drag ) were recorded by Aristotle, Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo Galilei, very little effort was made to develop a rigorous quantitative theory of air flow prior to the 17th century.

In 1505, Leonardo da Vinci wrote the Codex on the Flight of Birds, one of the earliest treatises on aerodynamics.

There are groups of drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, ( including his only surviving full-scale cartoon ), Dürer ( a collection of 138 drawings is one of the finest in existence ), Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt, Claude and Watteau, and largely complete collections of the works of all the great printmakers including Dürer ( 99 engravings, 6 etchings and most of his 346 woodcuts ), Rembrandt and Goya.

Cartoons by painters, such as the Raphael Cartoons in London and examples by Leonardo da Vinci, are highly prized in their own right.

Crankshafts were also described by Konrad Kyeser ( d. 1405 ), Leonardo da Vinci ( 1452 – 1519 ) and a Dutch " farmer " by the name Cornelis Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1592.

Cesare Borgia briefly employed Leonardo da Vinci as military architect and engineer between 1502 and 1503.

Their contemporary, Leonardo da Vinci ( 1452 – 1519 ) said,

The novelist Matteo Bandello observed Leonardo at work and wrote that some days he would paint from dawn till dusk without stopping to eat and then not paint for three or four days at a time.

Since Leonardo wrote with his left hand, it is probable that it was easier for him to write from right to left.

The 19th century brought a particular admiration for Leonardo's genius, causing Henry Fuseli to write in 1801: " Such was the dawn of modern art, when Leonardo da Vinci broke forth with a splendour that distanced former excellence: made up of all the elements that constitute the essence of genius ..." This is echoed by A. E. Rio who wrote in 1861: " He towered above all other artists through the strength and the nobility of his talents.

Art historian Bernard Berenson wrote in 1896: " Leonardo is the one artist of whom it may be said with perfect literalness: Nothing that he touched but turned into a thing of eternal beauty.

In one of his notebooks Leonardo da Vinci wrote:

" In his notebooks Leonardo da Vinci wrote of the Siren, " The siren sings so sweetly that she lulls the mariners to sleep ; then she climbs upon the ships and kills the sleeping mariners.

* 15th century: Leonardo da Vinci made the first known mention of air tanks in Italy: he wrote in his Atlantic Codex ( Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Milan ) that systems were used at that time to artificially breathe under water, but he did not explain them in detail due to what he described as " bad human nature ", that would have taken advantage of this technique to sink ships and even commit murders.

Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually mastered colour theory, and wrote extensively about it ; his lectures Writings on Form and Design Theory ( Schriften zur Form und Gestaltungslehre ), published in English as the Paul Klee Notebooks, are considered so important for modern art that they are compared to the importance that Leonardo da Vinci's A Treatise on Painting had for Renaissance.

Another biographer called him a " genius and swindler ", John Kenneth Galbraith wrote he was the " Leonardo of larcenists ".

Among other things, Leonardo wrote about the flow of water in rivers, and how it is affected by different obstacles put in its way.

Leonardo da Vinci wrote most of his personal notes in mirror, only using standard writing if he intended his texts to be read by others.

He also wrote the original graphic novels The Sandman Presents: The Furies with John Bolton and Hellblazer: All His Engines with Leonardo Manco.

Luca Pacioli wrote that Andrea was almost like a brother to Leonardo da Vinci.

In his notebooks, Leonardo da Vinci wrote of pareidolia as a device for painters, writing " if you look at any walls spotted with various stains or with a mixture of different kinds of stones, if you are about to invent some scene you will be able to see in it a resemblance to various different landscapes adorned with mountains, rivers, rocks, trees, plains, wide valleys, and various groups of hills.

In his closing years Lord Redesdale edited and wrote extensive effusive Introductions of two of Houston Stewart Chamberlain's huge books: Foundations of the Nineteenth Century and Immanuel Kant-A Study and Comparison with Goethe, Leonardo da Vinci, Bruno, Plato, and Descartes, both two volumes each, translated into English by John Lees, M. A., D. Litt., and published by John Lane at the Bodley Head, London, in 1910 and 1914.

Gombrich was a great admirer of Leonardo da Vinci and wrote extensively on him, both in these volumes and elsewhere

Baldassare Castiglione heard him sing, and wrote of him in his famous Book of the Courtier ( Venice, 1528 ), in the same paragraph in which he praises Leonardo da Vinci:

Freud claimed that this was a manifestation of a " passive homosexual " childhood fantasy that Leonardo wrote about in the Codex Atlanticus, in which he recounts being attacked as an infant in his crib by the tail of a vulture.
