He sanctioned a code of laws for Great and Lesser Poland, which gained for him the title of " the Polish Justinian " and founded the University of Kraków which is the oldest Polish university, although his death temporarily stalled the university's development ( which is why it is today called the " Jagiellonian " rather than " Casimirian " University ).

The name can be construed as referring to old Poland, as opposed to Lesser ( or Little ) Poland ( Polish Małopolska, Latin Polonia Minor ), a region in southern Poland with its capital at Kraków.

Lesser Poland ( also Little Poland, Polish Małopolska, Latin Polonia Minor ) is one of the historical regions of Poland ; its capital in the city Kraków.

It forms the southern part of the country, and should not be confused with the modern Lesser Poland Voivodeship, which covers only a small, southern part of Lesser Poland.

There are many banishing rituals, but most are some variation on two of the most common —" The Star Ruby " and the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram.

Only the Lesser Poland Chronicle gives the date of his birth as somewhere between the years 920 – 931 ( depending on the version of the manuscript ), however, modern researchers don't recognize the Chronicle as a reliable source.

On the other hand, a large part of the current administrative unit of the Silesian Voivodeship is not part of historical Silesia ( e. g., Częstochowa, Zawiercie, Myszków, Jaworzno, Sosnowiec, Żywiec, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Będzin and east part of Bielsko-Biała, which are historically Lesser Poland ).

Though most of the current territory of the former Częstochowa Voivodeship belongs to the Silesian Voivodeship, it historically is part of Lesser Poland, apart from western areas, around Lubliniec and Olesno.

Lesser Poland, or Polonia Minor, appeared for the first time in historical documents in 1493, in the Statutes of Piotrków, during the reign of King Jan Olbracht, to distinguish this province from the cradle of the Polish state, Greater Poland ( Polonia Maior ).

In the first years of Polish statehood, southern Lesser Poland was inhabited by the Slavic tribe of Vistulans, with two major centers in Kraków and Wiślica.

Małopolska Voivodeship or Małopolska Province ( in Polish, województwo małopolskie ), also known as Lesser Poland Voivodeship, is a voivodeship ( province ), in southern Poland.

The province's name recalls the traditional name of a historic Polish region, Lesser Poland, or in Polish: Małopolska.

Current Lesser Poland Voivodeship, however, covers only small part of the broader ancient Małopolska region which, together with Greater Poland ( Wielkopolska ) and Silesia ( Śląsk ), formed the early medieval Polish state.

It is also bordered by four other Polish voivodeships: those of Opole ( to the west ), Łódź ( to the north ), Świętokrzyskie ( to the north-east ), and Lesser Poland ( to the east ).

The disagreement between Polish landlords of Lesser Poland on one side and landlords of Greater Poland on the other, regarding the choice of the future King of Poland, finally ended in choosing the Lithuanian side ; the support of the lords of Greater Poland was not enough to give Prince Sigismund the Polish crown.
