Soon after, Ellenborough was forced to resign over an entirely separate matter involving the current Governor-General, Lord Canning.

Lord Canning ( created earl in 1859 ), appointed Governor-General of India in 1856, became known as " Clemency Canning " as a term of derision for his efforts to restrain revenge against the Indians during the Indian Mutiny.

Prime Ministers of the period included: William Pitt the Younger, Lord Grenville, Duke of Portland, Spencer Perceval, Lord Liverpool, George Canning, Lord Goderich, Duke of Wellington, Lord Grey, Lord Melbourne, and Sir Robert Peel.

In the 1820s, the British government was formally headed by King George IV, but in practice, was led by his Prime Ministers Lord Liverpool ( 1812 – 1827 ), George Canning ( 1827 ), Lord Goderich ( 1827 – 1828 ), and Duke of Wellington ( 1828 – 1830 ).

* April 10 – UK: George Canning succeeds Lord Liverpool as British Prime Minister.

Though a Whig, he accepted ( 29 April 1827 ) the post of Chief Secretary for Ireland in the moderate Tory governments of George Canning and Lord Goderich.

He resigned as Home Secretary after the Prime Minister, Lord Liverpool, became incapacitated and was replaced by George Canning.

George Canning himself died less than four months later and, after the brief premiership of Lord Goderich, Peel returned to the post of Home Secretary under the premiership of his long-time ally the Duke of Wellington.

In addition to Smith, Manby and Canning, artist Thomas Lawrence and Henry Hood ( the son of Lord Hood ) were also mentioned as potential paramours.

When Victor Emmanuel died, Lord Liverpool, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, wrote to his ministerial colleague George Canning that there should be public mourning in Britain, as a significant number of Britons had regarded Victor Emmanuel as their rightful king.

Putney Heath, near the Telegraph pub, was also the venue for the September 1809 duel between Cabinet ministers George Canning and Lord Castlereagh.

However, Castlereagh had the support of Lord Wellesley's younger brother General Arthur Wellesley ( future Duke of Wellington ), and evidence later surfaced that Canning himself had interfered with the plan, selecting the Earl of Chatham to command the expedition.

Portland was in deteriorating health and gave no lead, until Canning threatened resignation unless Castlereagh was removed and replaced by Lord Wellesley.

Upon the death of Lord Liverpool, Canning was called to be Prime Minister.

The Canning administration ended after only four months on the death of the Prime Minister, and was followed by the ministry of Lord Goderich, which barely survived the year.

Indeed when in 1827 it looked as if Canning would become Prime Minister, Lord Grey remarked that " the son of an actress is, ipso facto, disqualified from becoming Prime Minister ".

Canning struck up friendships with the then-future Lord Liverpool as well as with Granville Leveson-Gower and John Hookham Frere.

A young Whig, William Lamb ( the future Lord Melbourne, Prime Minister ) wrote an ‘ Epistle to the Editors of the Anti-Jacobin ’, which attacked Canning:

" a Christian ( Minaah ) once asked Abbahu in a tone of mockery, whereupon he replied: " When you will be wrapped in darkness, for it says, ' Behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the nations ; then shall the Lord rise upon thee and His glory shall be seen on thee ' lx. 2 ," ( Sanhedrin 99a ).
