The term was first coined by August Derleth, a contemporary correspondent of Lovecraft, who used the name of the creature Cthulhu — a central figure in Lovecraft literature and the focus of Lovecraft's famous short story The Call of Cthulhu ( first published in pulp magazine Weird Tales in 1928 )— to identify the system of lore employed by Lovecraft and his literary successors.

Lovecraft, Derleth published the first of several major collections of Smith's fiction, Out of Space and Time ( 1942 ).

For most of the 20th century, the definitive editions ( specifically At the Mountains of Madness and Other Novels, Dagon and Other Macabre Tales, The Dunwich Horror and Others, and The Horror in the Museum and Other Revisions ) of his prose fiction were published by Arkham House, a publisher originally started with the intent of publishing the work of Lovecraft, but which has since published a considerable amount of other literature as well.

So, all works of Lovecraft published during his lifetime, became public domain in all 27 European Union countries on 1 January 2008.

However, since April 1926 at the latest, Lovecraft had reserved all second printing rights to stories published in Weird Tales.

S. T. Joshi concludes in his biography, H. P. Lovecraft: A Life, that Derleth's claims are " almost certainly fictitious " and that most of Lovecraft's works published in the amateur press are most likely now in the public domain.

Lovecraft only provided specific information about Shub-Niggurath in his “ revision tales ”, stories published under the names of clients for whom he ghost-wrote.

The published story was regarded by Robert E. Howard ( the creator of Conan ) as " a masterpiece, which I am sure will live as one of the highest achievements of literature .... Mr. Lovecraft holds a unique position in the literary world ; he has grasped, to all intents, the worlds outside our paltry ken.

Lovecraft's attempts to work this idea into a novel floundered ( a 500-word fragment survives, first published under the title " Azathoth " in the journal Leaves in 1938 ), although Lovecraftian scholar Will Murray suggests that Lovecraft recycled the idea into his Dream Cycle novella The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, written in 1926.

" The Terrible Old Man " is a very short story ( less than 1200 words ) by H. P. Lovecraft, written on January 28, 1920, and first published in the Tryout, an amateur press publication, in July 1921.

Baird first published some of Weird Tales most famous writers, including H. P. Lovecraft, C. M. Eddy, Jr., Clark Ashton Smith and Seabury Quinn, author of the hugely popular Jules de Grandin stories.

Lovecraft also used the word in " The Thing on the Doorstep " ( published 1937 ) where the narrator refers to the corpse of his friend which was possessed by a sorcerer.

Smith was one of " the big three of Weird Tales, along with Robert E. Howard and H. P. Lovecraft, where some readers objected to his morbidness and violation of pulp traditions.

In an homage to his friend, Lovecraft referred in some of his stories to a great dark wizard, " Klarkash-Ton.

Lovecraft ( who some say is the original proponent of the philosophy ) and later writers who actually represented the beliefs in books such as Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

In " The Whisperer in Darkness " the Mi-go are heard to give praise to Nyarlathotep and Shub-Niggurath, suggesting some form of worship, although in newer works by authors other than Lovecraft, the Mi-go are at war with the Elder Gods.

For example, after playing a music-based video game, some people may be motivated to learn how to play a real instrument, or after watching a TV show that references Faust and Lovecraft, some people may be inspired to read the original work.

Lovecraft considered " The Music of Erich Zann " one of his best stories, in part because it avoided the overexplicitness that he saw as a major flaw in some of his other work.

Schwartz and Weisinger also founded the Solar Sales Service literary agency ( 1934 – 1944 ) where Schwartz represented such writers as Alfred Bester, Stanley G. Weinbaum, Robert Bloch, Ray Bradbury, and H. P. Lovecraft, including some of Bradbury's first published work and Lovecraft's last.

Still in this bleak panorama there are some curious cases like Cthulhu ( 2007 ) a horror / thriller film based on the works of H. P. Lovecraft, in which the main character is gay but it isn't the main thing, although it is important in the development of the character's psychology.

Lovecraft helped set type for Long's second poetry collection, The Goblin Tower ( 1935 ), correcting some of Long's faulty metre in the process.

Long's story " The Eye Above the Mantel " ( 1921 ) in UAPA caught the eye of H. P. Lovecraft, sparking a friendship and correspondence that would endure until Lovecraft's death in 1937.

Long's Howard Phillips Lovecraft: Dreamer on the Night Side was extensively edited by James Turner.

Lovecraft, in turn, ghostwrote for Long the preface to Mrs William B. Symmes ' Old World Footprints ( W. Paul Cook / The Recluse Press, 1928 ), a slim poetry collection by Long's aunt.

Long's short novel The Horror from the Hills ( Weird Tales, Jan and Feb-March 1931 ; published in book from 1963 ) incorporates verbatim a letter by Lovecraft recounting his great ' Roman dream ' of Hallow ' een 1927.

Long's parents frequently took Lovecraft on various motor trips between 1929 and 1930, and Lovecraft visited Long at Christmas between 1932 and 1935 inclusive.
