Even during the war, Lowell Thomas wrote in With Lawrence in Arabia that he could take pictures of him only by tricking him, although Lawrence did later agree to pose for several pictures for Thomas's stage show.

" Even before his marriage to the abolitionist Maria White, Lowell wrote: " The abolitionists are the only ones with whom I sympathize of the present extant parties.

He wrote a book of his adventures which became a best-seller in Germany, and Lowell Thomas ' book about him spread Luckner's fame widely.

Referring to her as Miranda, Lowell wrote that she stole old ideas and presented them as her own, she was genuine only in her spite and " when acting as censor, she privately blows a censer of vanity ' neath her own nose ".

" In the 20th century, American writer Elizabeth Hardwick, former wife of Robert Lowell, wrote an essay called " The Genius of Margaret Fuller " ( 1986 ).

" Before Lowell was transferred to the prison in Connecticut, he was held in a prison in New York City which he later wrote about in the poem " Memories of West Street and Lepke " from his book Life Studies.

" He also wrote that " all flaws considered, Lowell was still a fine, good, and honorable man.

In a letter to Jarrell from 1957, Lowell wrote, " I suppose we shouldn't swap too many compliments, but I am heavily in your debt.

For instance, Lowell wrote about a number of world historical figures in poems like " Caligula ," " Jonathan Edwards in Western Massachusetts ," and " Lady Raleigh's Lament.

Both Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville caricatured the Almanack — and Franklin by extension — in their writings, while James Russell Lowell, reflecting on the public unveiling in Boston of a statue to honor Franklin, wrote:

" Chicago feels a special interest in Mr. Lowell at this particular time because he is perhaps the foremost representative of the enterprising and opulent community which within the last week has secured the services of one of Chicago ’ s honored sons for the base-ball season of 1887 ," Field wrote.

Senator Eugene McCarthy began his campaign with a poem that he wrote in imitation of the poet Robert Lowell, " Are you running with me Jesus ":

Subsequently he wrote for U. S. newspapers in St. Louis, Boston, Chicago, and Lowell and Fall River, Massachusetts.

He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1880 and practiced law from 1880 to 1897 in partnership with his cousin, Francis Cabot Lowell, with whom he wrote Transfer of Stock in Corporations, which appeared in 1884.

Lowell also maintained a close friendship with the previously mentioned poet / critic Randall Jarrell from the time when they met at Kenyon College in 1937 until Jarrell's death in 1965.

In 1950, Ciardi edited a poetry collection, Mid-Century American Poets, which identified the best poets of the generation that had come into its own in the 1940s: Richard Wilbur, Muriel Rukeyser, John Frederick Nims, Karl Shapiro, Elizabeth Bishop, Theodore Roethke, Delmore Schwartz, Randall Jarrell, Robert Lowell, Ciardi himself, and several others.

The poet Robert Lowell stated publicly that he thought Jarrell had written " the best poetry in English about the Second World War.

Jarrell taught English at Kenyon for two years, coached tennis, and served as the resident faculty member in an undergraduate dormitory that housed future writers Robie Macauley, Peter Taylor, and poet Robert Lowell.

Lowell and Jarrell remained good friends and peers until Jarrell's death.

According to Lowell biographer Paul Mariani, " Jarrell was the first person of own generation he genuinely held in awe " due to Jarrell's brilliance and confidence even at the age of 23.

Reporting on the memorial service, The New York Times quoted Lowell who said that Jarrell was "' the most heartbreaking poet of our time '.

Percival Lawrence Lowell ( March 13, 1855 – November 12, 1916 ) was an American businessman, author, mathematician, and astronomer who fueled speculation that there were canals on Mars, founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, and formed the beginning of the effort that led to the discovery of Pluto 14 years after his death.
