* January 6 – The Lunar Prospector spacecraft is launched into orbit around the Moon, and later finds evidence for frozen water, in soil in permanently shadowed craters near the Moon's poles.

A four stage Athena II using Castor 120s as both first and second stages became the first commercially developed launch vehicle to launch a lunar probe ( Lunar Prospector ) in 1998.

Lunar Prospector was the third mission selected by NASA for full development and construction as part of the Discovery Program.

Based on Lunar Prospector Neutron Spectrometer ( NS ) data, mission scientists have determined that there is indeed water ice in the polar craters of the Moon.

Most recently, the composition of this basin has been further constrained by the analysis of data obtained from a gamma-ray spectrometer that was on board the Lunar Prospector mission.

The composition of this basin, as estimated from the Galileo, Clementine and Lunar Prospector missions, show that it is different from typical highland regions.

Before the mission of Lunar Prospector lunar satellite, it was commonly thought that these KREEP materials had been formed in a widespread layer beneath the crust.

In support of the outgassing hypothesis, data from the Lunar Prospector alpha particle spectrometer indicate the recent outgassing of radon to the surface.

All six of the Apollo missions on which samples were collected landed in the central nearside of the Moon, an area that has subsequently been shown to be geochemically anomalous by the Lunar Prospector mission.

Atari had been in the process of manufacturing another vector game, Lunar Lander, but demand for Asteroids was so high " that several hundred Asteroids games were shipped in Lunar Lander cabinets.

The prototype was given to engineer Howard Delman, who refined it, productized it, and then added additional features for Atari's first vector game, Lunar Lander.

When it was decided that Asteroids would be a vector game as well, Delman modified a Lunar Lander circuit board for Ed Logg.

Kennedy's goal was accomplished on the Apollo 11 mission when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed their Lunar Module ( LM ) on the Moon on July 20, 1969 and walked on its surface while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command spacecraft, and all three landed safely on Earth on July 24.

The second of the so-called J-missions, the mission was crewed by Commander John Young, Lunar Module Pilot Charles Duke and Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly.

Apollo 16 was slated to be the second of the " J-missions ," an Apollo mission type featuring the use of the Lunar Roving Vehicle ( LRV ), increased scientific capability, and lunar surface stays of three days.

Following transposition and docking, the crew noticed the exterior surface of the Lunar Module was giving off particles from a spot where the LM's skin appeared torn or shredded ; at one point, Charlie Duke estimated they were seeing about five to ten particles per second.

The remainder of flight day four was spent making observations and preparing for activation of the Lunar Module, undocking, and landing the next day.

" The pair's first task of the moonwalk was to unload the Lunar Roving Vehicle ( LRV ), along with other equipment, from the Lunar Module.

The day's next task was to deploy the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package ( ALSEP ); while they were parking the lunar rover, on which the TV camera was mounted, to observe the deployment, the rear steering began functioning without explanation.

While deploying a heat-flow experiment that had burned up with the Lunar Module Aquarius on Apollo 13 and had been attempted without success on Apollo 15, a cable was inadvertently snapped after getting caught around Young's foot.

The crew's next task, after jettisoning the Lunar Module ascent stage, was to release a sub-satellite into lunar orbit from the CSM's Scientific Instrument Bay.

The visuals were drastically simplified, being closer to early shooters like Wolfenstein 3D ; also, it consists solely of Lunar Apocalypse, the second from the original game's three " episodes ", which was heavily modified to suit the engine.

Darwin was also a founding member of the Lunar Society of Birmingham, a discussion group of pioneering industrialists and natural philosophers.

Astronomical reconstruction of the Jewish Lunar calendar tends to favor John's chronology, in that the only year during the governorship of Pontius Pilate when the 15th Nisan is calculated as falling on a Wednesday / Thursday was 27 CE, which appears too early as the year of the crucifixion, whereas the 14th of Nisan fell on a Thursday / Friday in both 30 CE and 33 CE.

He was the twelfth and last of the Apollo astronauts to arrive and set foot on the Moon, as Apollo 17 crewmate Eugene Cernan exited the Apollo Lunar Module first.

Apollo flights 18 and 19 were cancelled in September 1970, but Schmitt was assigned in August 1971 to fly on the last lunar mission, Apollo 17, replacing Joe Engle as Lunar Module Pilot.

Another means for the spread of innovation was by the network of informal philosophical societies, like the Lunar Society of Birmingham, in which members met to discuss ' natural philosophy ' ( i. e. science ) and often its application to manufacturing.

He was a member of the Royal Society of Arts, and an associate of some of the members of the Lunar Society.

He was an important member of the Lunar Society, and was a much sought-after conversationalist and companion, always interested in expanding his horizons.

He was an active member of the Lunar Society often held at Erasmus Darwin House and is remembered on the Moonstones in Birmingham.
