Guerrilla activities continued until a United Nations-monitored cease-fire was implemented September 6, 1991 via the mission MINURSO.

The TAN colored combat uniform was also issued to Canadian troops serving in the Western Sahara with the UN Mission ( MINURSO ) during 1992 – 1993.

In October 2006 the Security Council passed a resolution extending the mandate of MINURSO to April 2007.

According to maps from MINURSO or the UNHCR, part of the wall extends several kilometers into internationally recognized Mauritanian territory.

These zones are temporary divisions negotiated as a part of the MINURSO ceasefire.

A UN peace-keeping mission ( MINURSO ) has been charged with overseeing the cease-fire and organizating the referendum, which has still not taken place.

As of April 6, 2010, MINURSO had a total of 233 uniformed personnel, including 27 troops, 6 police officers and 200 military observers, supported by 95 international civilian personnel, 145 local civilian staff and 23 UN Volunteers.

The Polisario Front and the MINURSO rescued several dozens lost in the desert, who had run out of water.

As of 2008, Poland had deployed 985 personnel in eight separarate UN peacekeeping operations ( the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, MINURSO, MONUC, UNOCI, UNIFIL, UNMEE, UNMIK, UNMIL, and UNOMIG ).

The UN dispatched a peace-keeping mission, the MINURSO, to oversee the cease-fire and make arrangements for the vote.

In order to resolve the sovereignty issue, the UN has attempted to hold a referendum through the mission United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara ( MINURSO ), and is holding direct talks between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front.

UN involvement in the Western Sahara includes MINURSO, a peacekeeping force, and UNHCR, for refugee assistance and resettlement.

In May 2010, Polisario Front suspended contacts with the MINURSO, because of the failure on implementing the self-determination referendum, and accused the force of "... turning into a protector shield of a colonial fact, the occupation of Western Sahara by Morocco ".
