The 640 kB barrier on " conventional " system memory available to MS-DOS is a legacy of that period ; other non-clone machines did not have this limit.

The Commander Keen series, a platform game introducing one of the first smooth side-scrolling game engines for MS-DOS, brought Id Software into the gaming mainstream.

In 1994, Peterson rewrote The Realm of Angmar, adapting it to MS-DOS ( the basis for many dial-in BBS systems ), and renamed it Swords of Chaos.
