Today, the Galleria Nazionale dell ' Umbria in Perugia houses a number of masterpieces, including the Madonna with Child and six Angels, which represents the Renaissance Marian art of Duccio.

Lorenzetti's 1330 Madonna dei Tramonti also reflects the ongoing influence of Giotto on his Marian art, midway through his career.

No image ( in either the Western or the Eastern Church ) permeates Christian art as the image of Madonna and Child.

While Mary, the Mother of Jesus, may be referred to as " the Madonna " in other contexts, in art the term is applied specifically to an artwork in which Mary, with or without the infant Jesus, is the focus, and central figure of the picture.

It houses, besides the tomb of Paolo Rucellai ( 15th century ) and the marble statue of the Madonna and the Child by Nino Pisano, several art treasures such as remains of frescoes by the Maestro di Santa Cecilia ( end 13th-beginning 14th century ).

In Madonna and Child, there is a clear debt to Byzantine art.

In 1894, he enlarged the spectrum of motifs by adding Anxiety, Ashes, Madonna and Women in Three Stages ( from innocence to old age ).
