The Shirehorses are a spoof band comprising two BBC Radio DJs from Manchester, Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley, known collectively as Mark and Lard.

In 1978 Wilson compered the new wave afternoon at Deeply Vale Festivals ; this was actually the fourth live appearance by the fledgling Durutti Column and that afternoon Wilson also introduced an appearance ( very early in their career ) by The Fall featuring Mark E. Smith and Marc " Lard " Riley on bass guitar.

Mark and Lard joined Radio 1 in October 1993 and left in March 2004.

Mark & Lard began their Radio 1 career presenting the late-night " graveyard shift " ( 10pm to midnight ) in October 1993, taking over from Nicky Campbell who had previously occupied the slot.

Mark and Lard are also the creators of the spoof rock band " The Shirehorses ", who released two CD albums:

His most famous work was as part of the act Mark and Lard ( with Marc " The Boy Lard " Riley ) on Radio 1.

Radcliffe experienced brief commercial success with Shirehorses, a parody band ( its name based on the short-lived band The Seahorses ) spawned from his Mark And Lard antics.

Marc has worked in radio since about 1990 and for 14 years of that he worked with Mark Radcliffe on BBC Radio 5 and BBC Radio 1, during which time he was known as Lard.

Riley is perhaps best known as one half of the duo Mark and Lard with fellow DJ Mark Radcliffe, who together presented " Hit The North " on BBC Radio 5, then a children's, comedy, and drama network, with Radcliffe also fronting a weekly show called Out on Blue Six on BBC Radio 1 around the same time.

In 2009 Mark and Lard reformed and fronted radio adverts for Manchester City FC in the North West of England ( Riley is a long-time fan of the club ).

After Mark Radcliffe and Marc ' Lard ' Riley had an unsuccessful stint on the breakfast show, the team of Kevin Greening and Zoe Ball were hosting the breakfast show when Bannister left Radio 1 in 1998 ( Ball would subsequently host the show on her own ).

Mayo remained on the mid-morning slot until he left Radio 1 in 2001, seeing breakfast-show presenters Mark Goodier, Steve Wright, Chris Evans, Mark and Lard, Kevin Greening, Zoe Ball & Sara Cox, come and go from the slot.

In April 2004 this show moved from a weekend morning slot to weekday afternoons, broadcasting between 13: 00 and 16: 00, after the departure of Mark and Lard from the station.

More recently he had presented Frank Sidebottom's Proper Telly Show in B / W for the Manchester-based television station Channel M. Throughout his career, Sidebottom made appearances on radio stations such as Manchester's Piccadilly Radio and on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 5, alongside Mark and Lard.
