The Marsh Tit has a noticeably smaller and shorter head than the Willow Tit and overall the markings are crisp and neat, with the head in proportion to the rest of the bird ( Willow Tit gives the impression of being ' bull-necked ').
A measure of the difficulty in identification is given by the fact that, in the UK, the Willow Tit was not identified as distinct from Marsh Tit until 1897.
Two German ornithologists, Ernst Hartert and Otto Kleinschmidt, were studying Marsh Tit skins at the British Museum and found two wrongly-labelled Willow Tits amongst them ( two Willow Tit specimens were then collected at Coalfall Wood in Finchley, north London, and that species was added to the British list in 1900 ).
This is supported by mtDNA cytochrome b sequence analysis ; within Poecile, the Marsh Tit is part of a group of Eurasian ' typical chickadees ' that includes also the Willow Tit, Père David's Tit, Black-bibbed Tit, and the Songar Tit.
Note the glossy cap, smaller bib and uniform wings which help distinguish it from the Willow Tit. In mixed winter tit flocks, seldom more than one or two Marsh Tits are present, and parties of this species alone are infrequent.
The Willow Tit is distinguished from the Marsh Tit by a sooty brown instead of a glossy blue black cap ; the general colour is otherwise similar, though the under parts are more buff and the flanks distinctly more rufous ; the pale buff edgings to the secondaries form a light patch on the closed wing.
This is supported by mtDNA cytochrome b sequence analysis ; within Poecile, the Willow Tit is part of a group of Eurasian " typical chickadees " that includes also the Marsh Tit, Père David's Tit, and the Songar Tit ( Gill et al.
In fact the Willow Tit, Black-Capped Chickadee, Marsh Tit and Carolina Chickadee are all very similar to one another in appearance.
It was originally a small village settlement called Gwaun Helygen ( Cors Helygen in Modern Welsh, meaning " Marsh of the Willow " in English ), and lay in the former county of Brecknockshire.

The alder carr and willow carr support the Swallowtail Butterfly and the Norfolk hawker dragonfly Aeshna isosceles, as well as Marsh Harriers, Bearded Tits and most of the country's Cetti's Warblers.
