On one hand, Marx, in the 19th century's deepest critique of the dehumanising aspects of this system, noted that defining features of capitalism include alienation, exploitation, and recurring, cyclical depressions leading to mass unemployment ; on the other hand capitalism is also characterised by " revolutionizing, industrializing and universalizing qualities of development, growth and progressivity " ( by which Marx meant industrialisation, urbanisation, technological progress, increased productivity and growth, rationality and scientific revolution ), that are responsible for progress.

Prior to Marx, economists noted that the problem with using the " quantity of labour " to establish the value of commodities was that the time spent by an unskilled worker would be longer than the time spent on the same commodity by a skilled worker.

Adolf Abramovich Joffe who later himself committed suicide to protest against the expulsion of Leon Trotsky from the Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party noted in his final letter to Trotsky on the verge of committing suicide that he supported the suicide pact of Lafargue and Marx in his youth:

It will be noted that at no stage does Marx make the central claim with which Trotsky's conception ( see below ) of ' permanent revolution ' is concerned-i. e., that it is possible for a country to pass directly from the dominance of the semi-feudal aristocrats, who held political power in Russia in the early part of the 19th century, to the dominance of the working class, without an interceding period of dominance by the bourgeois.

Marx also noted that the foundation of what he called " modern political economy " only needs, for the theory of value, that wages be a given magnitude.

Karl Marx's famous Critique of the Gotha Program criticized what he saw as a Lassallean victory over the Eisenachers whom he favored ; interestingly, Bernstein later noted that it was Liebknecht, considered by many to be the strongest Marxist advocate within the Eisenacher faction, who proposed the inclusion of many of the ideas which so thoroughly irritated Marx.
