The Eye of the World revolves around the lives of a group of young people from Emond's Field in The Two Rivers district: Rand al ' Thor, Matrim ( Mat ) Cauthon, Perrin Aybara, Egwene al ' Vere, and Nynaeve al ' Meara.

The story features young heroes Rand al ' Thor, Mat Cauthon, and Perrin Aybara, who join Shienaren soldiers in a quest to retrieve the Horn of Valere.

* In the city of Ebou Dar in Altara, Elayne Trakand, Nynaeve al ' Meara, Aviendha, and Mat Cauthon search for a ter ' angreal, the Bowl of the Winds, to break the unnatural heat brought on by the Dark One's manipulation of climate.

Accompanying, guiding, and protecting the three potential boys — Rand al ' Thor, Mat Cauthon and Perrin Aybara — she took along a few others ( Thom Merrilin, Nynaeve al ' Meara and Egwene al ' Vere ) to the safety of the White Tower.

It is revealed by Moiraine that Rand ( like his friends Mat Cauthon and Perrin Aybara ) is Ta ' veren-a person around whom the Pattern is woven.

Rand, his two friends ( Perrin Aybara and Mat Cauthon ), his childhood sweetheart Egwene al ' Vere and the gleeman Thom Merrilin were led out of Emond's Field by Aes Sedai Moiraine Damodred and her Warder, al ' Lan Mandragoran ( the group is eventually joined by Emonds Field's Wisdom, Nynaeve al ' Meara ).

Book 3, The Dragon Reborn, was in fact told almost exclusively from the points-of-view of Mat Cauthon, Perrin Aybara, and Egwene al ' Vere, despite the fact that it is undoubtedly about Rand ( all three parties eventually follow him to Tear and are present when he pulls the sword Callandor from the Stone and proclaims himself the Dragon Reborn ), and the following books have continued in following the adventures of other characters besides Rand, to such a degree at times that in the tenth book, Crossroads of Twilight, Rand only appears in two chapters and the epilogue.

Alanna was also one of the Aes Sedai who were responsible for Healing Mat Cauthon from the taint of the Shadar Logoth dagger.

Deadly and unspeakably competent with a bow, she is also by far the most raucous of Elayne's entourage ; she and Mat Cauthon share a fondness for drink, carousing and foul language, a friendship strengthened by Mat's memories and the fact that he is the Hornsounder.

When both Rand and Mat Cauthon return from Rhuidean without Muradin, Couladin attacks them, accusing them of murdering his brother.

One of the many heroes tied to the Horn of Valere, he came when Mat Cauthon blew the legendary instrument and joined in the battle against the Seanchan.

It is not possible that young Olver, a companion of Mat Cauthon, is the reincarnation of Gaidal.

In A Crown of Swords Farstrider is going by the name of Noal Charin when he meets Mat Cauthon in Ebou Dar and stays with him and his men.

He first appeared in The Dragon Reborn where he betrays and later saves Nynaeve, Egwene, and Elayne with the help of Mat Cauthon.

Aviendha, Mat Cauthon and small number of the Band of the Red Hand also accompany them.

He was discovered by Mat Cauthon, who took a liking to him and taught him to ride and fight.

Mat Cauthon thinks that she is not Ebou Dari, which would indeed make sense if she was a White Tower runaway or exile.

Mat Cauthon is taken to Tar Valon by Verin Mathwin, Nynaeve al ' Meara, Egwene al ' Vere, Elayne Trakand, and Hurin.

At the start of the battle, Mat Cauthon saves some troops from a Shaido ambush.

Mat Cauthon, unsure of what to do, finds answers within the Stone of Tear's Aelfinn ter ' angreal, and is prompted to follow Rand to the Aiel Waste.

Wrongly thinking the Salidar Aes Sedai few in number and cowed, Rand sends Mat Cauthon to retrieve Elayne Trakand and win the allegiance of the rebel Aes Sedai.

Mat Cauthon continues trying to escape Seanchan-controlled territory while courting Tuon, the Daughter of the Nine Moons, the woman whom he has kidnapped and who, it has been prophesied, will become his wife.

He is now more comfortable with responsibility, and although initially irritated by her, Mat marries Tuon at the conclusion of Knife of Dreams, making him what he always professed to despise — both married, and a nobleman.

The events during Knife of Dreams also confirm what many readers had speculated from previous novels: that Mat would be crucial to the introduction of firearms to the world of The Wheel of Time via gunpowder used in the making of fireworks ; he has already used explosives to breach the Stone of Tear.

Mat and the Band of the Red Hand successfully mount a guerrilla campaign against the enemy forces, making good use of fireworks-turned-artillery.

During his time with UPW, the Miz competed in UPW's Mat War's tournament, making it to the finals before losing to Tony Stradlin.

He was the first Sant Mat Master to visit Africa, making a five month tour through the continent and visiting twelve countries, from October to February 1989.
