The MediaPortal source code was initially forked from XBMC, though it has been almost completely re-written since then.

Many such third-party skins exist that are well maintained by the community, and while some skins are originals with unique designs, most initially begin as a clone or an exact replica of other multimedia software interfaces, such as Apple Front Row, Windows Media Center Edition ( MCE ), MediaPortal, Wii Channel Menu ( Xii ), Xbox 360 interface, and others.

Derivative applications such as MediaPortal, Plex and Voddler have been spun-off from XBMC, some of them, such as Boxee, are certified by the XBMC Foundation and developers and are designated as " Powered by XBMC " or "' Designed for XBMC ".

PVR Client Addons are today available for DVBViewer, ForTheRecord, Tvheadend, MediaPortal, MythTV, NextPVR ( formerly GB-PVR ), VDR, and Enigma2 based DVR set-top boxes like Dreambox and Vu +.

Software such as Boxee, GB-PVR, SageTV, MediaPortal and Beyond TV support the use of Windows MCE and other remote controls.

MediaPortal provides a full Client / Server set-up with Live TV / DVR ( Recorded or Timeshifted ) streaming.

MediaPortal also uses this format and comes with the plugin My Burner, which can be used to ( automatically ) convert DVR-MS files to regular MPEG-2.

MediaPortal runs only under Microsoft Windows, unlike most other open-source media center programs such as MythTV and XBMC, which are usually cross-platform.

MediaPortal uses its own TV-Server to allow to set up one central server with one or more TV cards.

Clients can then install the MediaPortal Client software and use the TV-Server to watch live or recorded TV, schedule recordings, view and search EPG data over the network.

MediaPortal uses the codec of MPC-HT by default, but the codec can be changed to all installed ones, such like Ffdshow, PowerDVD, CoreAVC, Nvidia PureVideo etc.
