Marius Jean Antonin Mercié ( October 30, 1845 – December 13, 1916, Paris ), was a French sculptor and painter.

Mercié was born in Toulouse.

The lithograph, depicting Lee on his horse, was the basis for the bronze statue created by French sculptor Antonin Mercié.

He was educated at the Massachusetts Normal Art School enrolling in 1877 at 18 years of age, and in 1885-1890 he was a pupil of Antonin Mercié in Paris.

From 1887 to 1889 he studied sculpture at the Académie Julian in Paris with Antonin Mercié and Emmanuel Frémiet, becoming an accomplished animalier ( animal sculptor ).

A similar work for the tomb of Jules Michelet ( 1879 ; designed with architect Jean-Louis Pascal ) is in Père Lachaise Cemetery, and in the same year Mercié produced the statue of Arago with accompanying reliefs, now erected at Perpignan.

Mercié also designed the monuments to Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier ( 1895 ), erected in the Jardin de l ' Infante in the Louvre, and Louis Faidherbe ( 1896 ) at Lille, a statue of Adolphe Thiers set up at St Germain-en-Laye, the monument to Paul Baudry at Père Lachaise, and that of Louis-Philippe and Queen Amélie for their tomb at Dreux.

In 1885, Ruckstull entered the Académie Julian, and studied under Gustave Boulanger, Camille Lefèvre, Jean Dampt and Antonin Mercié.
