Most of the other buildings are Victorian or later and include: St. Alban Quad ( or " Stubbins "), designed by Basil Champneys, built on the site of the medieval St. Alban Hall ( elements of the older façade are incorporated into the part that faces onto Merton Street ); the Grove building, built in 1864 by William Butterfield but " chastened " in the 1930s ; the buildings beyond the Fellows ' Garden called " Rose Lane "; several buildings north of Merton Street, including a real tennis court, and the Old Warden's Lodgings ( designed by Champneys in 1903 ); and a new quadrangle in Holywell Street, some distance away from the college.

He was born at Beckett Hall in Shrivenham in Berkshire ( now Oxfordshire ), the home of his father, John Shute Barrington, 1st Viscount Barrington and educated at Eton College and Merton College, Oxford.

Serendipity is used as a sociological method in Anselm L. Strauss ' and Barney G. Glaser's Grounded Theory, building on ideas by sociologist Robert K. Merton, who in Social Theory and Social Structure ( 1949 ) referred to the " serendipity pattern " as the fairly common experience of observing an unanticipated, anomalous and strategic datum which becomes the occasion for developing a new theory or for extending an existing theory.

It was not until 1598 that the library began to thrive once more, when Thomas Bodley ( a former fellow of Merton College ) wrote to the Vice Chancellor of the University offering to support the development of the library: " where there hath bin hertofore a publike library in Oxford: which you know is apparent by the rome it self remayning, and by your statute records I will take the charge and cost upon me, to reduce it again to his former use.

Merton and the family spent most of that summer visiting the hospital to see his father, who was so ill he could no longer speak.

Merton began going to the churches, not quite knowing why he felt so drawn to them.

In January 1939 Merton had heard good things from friends of his about a part-time teacher on campus named Daniel Walsh, so he decided to take a course on Thomas Aquinas with Walsh.

This is not to say that Merton believed that these religions did not have valuable rituals or practices for him and other Christians, but that, doctrinally, Merton was so committed to Christianity and he felt that practitioners of other faiths were so committed to their own doctrines that any discussion of doctrine would be useless for all involved.

Merton states “ just as the same item may have multiple functions, so may the same function be diversely fulfilled by alternative items ” in Holmwood, 2005: 91.

As has been shown above, Merton addressed this limitation through his concept of deviance, and so it can be seen that functionalism allows for agency.

The Matthew Effect was coined by Robert K. Merton to describe how eminent scientists get more credit than a comparatively unknown researcher, even if their work is similar, so that credit will usually be given to researchers who are already famous.

Of course, their paper on that subject, timed so as to coincide with a related paper by Robert C. Merton, would revolutionize financial economics three years later.

Merton, having been rejected for active service on grounds of health, was commissioned in 1916 as a lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in the secret service, the first scientist to be so appointed.
