Well known DBMSs include Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQLite.

Some general-purpose DBMSs, like Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and IBM DB2, have been undergoing upgrades for thirty years or more.

They are typically the employees of a DBMS vendor ( e. g., Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, Sybase ), or, in the case of Open source DBMSs ( e. g., MySQL ), volunteers or people supported by interested companies and organizations.

It was also licensed to IBM by Microsoft, and marketed by them as PC-DOS.

Currently the most widely used hierarchical databases are IMS developed by IBM and Windows Registry by Microsoft.

IBM veterans from the PC project disputed the book's description of events, and Microsoft described it as " one-sided and inaccurate.

It is compatible with Microsoft / IBM BASICA, but was disk based and did not need the ROM BASIC.

It was bundled with MS-DOS operating systems on IBM PC compatibles by Microsoft.

In 1983, Microsoft announced the development of Windows, a graphical user interface ( GUI ) for its own operating system ( MS-DOS ), which had shipped for IBM PC and compatible computers since 1981.

During the mid to late 1980s, Microsoft and IBM had cooperatively been developing OS / 2 as a successor to DOS.

By the early 1990s, conflicts developed in the Microsoft / IBM relationship.

Microsoft wanted to further develop Windows, while IBM desired for future work to be based on OS / 2.

In an attempt to resolve this tension, IBM and Microsoft agreed that IBM would develop OS / 2 2. 0, to replace OS / 2 1. 3 and Windows 3. 0, while Microsoft would develop a new operating system, OS / 2 3. 0, to later succeed OS / 2 2. 0.

This agreement soon however fell apart, and the Microsoft / IBM relationship was terminated.

IBM continued to develop OS / 2, while Microsoft changed the name of its ( as yet unreleased ) OS / 2 3. 0 to Windows NT.

Even though the 3. 1x series still lacked most of the important features of OS / 2, such as long file names, a desktop, or protection of the system against misbehaving applications, Microsoft quickly took over the OS and GUI markets for the IBM PC.

IBM later introduced OS / 2 into the United States v. Microsoft case, blaming unfair marketing tactics on Microsoft's part.

Even though Microsoft released a cheap version of Adventure with its initial version of MS-DOS 1. 0 for IBM PCs, Zork I was still a popular seller for the PC, thanks to the superior quality of its writing and packaging.

It was arguably responsible for the split between Microsoft and IBM, since IBM insisted that OS / 2, originally a joint venture between IBM and Microsoft, would run on a 286 ( and in text mode ).

As Steve Wozniak, the creator of Integer BASIC and the only person who understood it well enough to add floating point features, was busy with the Disk II drive and controller and with Apple DOS, Apple turned to Microsoft, who was the BASIC vendor of choice after their success with Altair BASIC, and licensed a 10 KB assembly language version of BASIC dubbed " Applesoft.

It has been ported to Microsoft Windows and distributed with Cygwin and MinGW, to DOS by the DJGPP project, to Novell NetWare and to Android via various terminal emulation applications.

Doom became a " killer app " that all capable consoles and operating systems were expected to have, and versions of Doom have subsequently been released for the following systems: DOS, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Apple Macintosh, Super NES, Sega 32X, Sony PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, iOS, Symbian OS, RISC OS, Atari Jaguar, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, Tapwave Zodiac, 3DO, Xbox, and Xbox Live Arcade.

While a few short-lived DOS based EDuke projects emerged, it was not until the release of EDuke32, an extended version of Duke3D incorporating variants of both Fowler's Microsoft Windows JFDuke3D code and Saettler's EDuke code, by one of 3D Realms ' forum moderators in late 2004 that EDuke's scripting extensions received community focus.

They are used to emulate a hardware device, particularly in virtualization environments, for example when a DOS program is run on a Microsoft Windows computer or when a guest operating system is run on, for example, a Xen host.

Despite the age of this concept, file managers based on Norton Commander are actively developed, and dozens of implementations exist for DOS, Unix, and Microsoft Windows.

Microsoft had a double gain from its release: first, it made it impossible for consumers to run Windows 95 on a cheaper, non-Microsoft DOS ; secondly, although traces of DOS were never completely removed from the system and MS DOS 7 would be loaded briefly as a part of the booting process, Windows 95 applications ran solely in 386 enhanced mode, with a flat 32-bit address space and virtual memory.

The last version of MultiMate was packaged with many of these add-on programs under the product name " MultiMate Advantage " to compete with other word processor software of the day, especially IBM DisplayWrite for DOS, which Multimate International developers saw as their main competition in the business market, and to a lesser extent WordPerfect, the DOS incarnation of Microsoft Word and the Samna word processor, which had its roots in another office word processing computer.

Perhaps the leading cause was antipathy for the idea that Microsoft could and would establish a monopoly for Windows and DOS, widely deemed as far inferior to OS / 2.

In 1980, after promising to deliver IBM a Disk Operating System ( DOS ) they had not yet developed for the Intel 8088-based IBM PC, Allen spearheaded a deal for Microsoft to purchase a Quick and Dirty Operating System ( QDOS ) written by Tim Paterson who, at the time, was employed at Seattle Computer Products.

As a result of this transaction, Microsoft was able to secure a contract to supply the DOS that would eventually run on IBM's PC line.

On March 11, 1997, id Software released WinQuake, a version of the non-OpenGL engine designed to run under Microsoft Windows ; the original Quake had been written for DOS, allowing for launch from Windows 95, but could not run under Windows NT-based operating systems because it required direct access to hardware.

When specifying file names ( or paths ) in CP / M, DOS, Microsoft Windows and Unix-like operating systems, the asterisk character ("*") substitutes for zero or more characters.

As of version 4. 0, programs that use the library work on DOS, Microsoft Windows, BeOS,, and various Unix-like systems with ( or without ) X Window System, abstracting their application programming interfaces ( APIs ) into one portable interface.
