* In the rings of Saturn, the Cassini Division is a gap between the inner B Ring and the outer A Ring that has been cleared by a 2: 1 resonance with the moon Mimas.

Saturn's moon Mimas has a more spherical shape despite being slightly less massive than Proteus, perhaps due to the higher temperature near Saturn or tidal heating.

Pandora also has a 3: 2 mean-motion resonance with Mimas.

The impact that made this crater must have nearly shattered Mimas: fractures can be seen on the opposite side of Mimas that may have been created by shock waves from the impact travelling through the moon's body.

Relaxing the demand for strict sphericity was mandated by the fact that many large objects in the Solar System, such as the planets Jupiter and Saturn, the moons Mimas, Enceladus and Miranda, and the dwarf planet, have been distorted into oblate or prolate spheroids by rapid rotation or tidal forces.

If Tethys had been colder and more brittle at the time of impact, the moon might have been shattered, and even if it survived the impact, the topography of the crater would have retained its shape, similar to the crater Herschel on Mimas.

At that time, only nine satellites had been discovered, the innermost known satellite being Mimas.

Lister, determined to make enough money to get back home, spent six months stealing " hoppers " ( the equivalent of taxis on Mimas ) and collecting the fares, but he lost all his money several times from blowing it all on alcohol ( hoping that if he got drunk enough again, he would awaken back in London ) and on one occasion being mugged by a drug addict who was high on the narcotic " Bliss ".

There are several impact craters named Herschel in the solar system, although the best known is the huge crater on Saturn's moon Mimas.

When several Sirian ships pursue the Shooting Starr, Starr conceals himself and his ship in the interior of Mimas ; leaves Wessilewsky below the surface with enough supplies to maintain himself for several months ; then takes the Shooting Starr back into space, where they are captured by the Sirians and taken to the colony on Titan.

Mimas was killed in exile, fighting alongside Aeneas in Italy, by Mezentius, king of the Etruscans.

Mimas is a moon of Saturn which was discovered in 1789 by William Herschel.

Mimas was discovered by the astronomer William Herschel on 17 September 1789.

The names of all seven then-known satellites of Saturn, including Mimas, were suggested by William Herschel's son John in his 1847 publication Results of Astronomical Observations made at the Cape of Good Hope.

The adjectival form of Mimas is Mimantean or Mimantian, and this is accepted by the Cassini mission at JPL.

The repeated pulls by Mimas on the Cassini division particles, always in the same direction in space, force them into new orbits outside the gap.

Pioneer 11 flew by Saturn in 1979, and its closest approach to Mimas was 104, 263 km on September 1, 1979.

A close flyby occurred on February 13, 2010, when Cassini passed by Mimas at.

In 2010, NASA revealed a temperature map of Mimas, using images obtained by Cassini.

Enceladus ' brother Mimas was buried beneath Vesuvius by Hephaestus, and the blood of other defeated giants welled up in the Phlegrean Fields surrounding Vesuvius.

Within the continuity of the books by Grant Naylor, Lister went on a drunken Monopoly board pub crawl in London with his friends to celebrate his 23rd birthday, where he got very, very drunk ; when he awoke, he was on Mimas, one of Saturn's moons, wearing a lady's pink crimplene hat and a pair of yellow fishing waders, with no money and a passport in the name of " Emily Berkenstein ".

The ellipsoid shape of Mimas is especially noticeable in recent images from the Cassini probe.

Mimas is responsible for clearing the material from the Cassini Division, the gap between Saturn's two widest rings, the A Ring and B Ring.

Particles in the Huygens Gap at the inner edge of the Cassini division are in a 2: 1 resonance with Mimas.

The Cassini mission, which arrived at Saturn in the summer of 2004, initially discovered three small inner moons including Methone and Pallene between Mimas and Enceladus as well as the second Lagrangian moon of Dione — Polydeuces.

Of these the most lofty and striking were Mimas and Corycus, in the peninsula which stands out to the west, facing the island of Chios ; Sipylus, to the north of Smyrna, Corax, extending to the south-west from the Gulf of Smyrna, and descending to the sea between Lebedus and Teos ; and the strongly marked range of Mycale, a continuation of Messogisin the interior, which forms the bold headland of Trogilium or Mycale, opposite Samos.

When seen from certain angles, Mimas resembles the Death Star, a fictional space station known from the film Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, which is said to be roughly 140 kilometres in diameter.

At about 400 km, it is larger than the Saturnian moon Mimas, which is fully spherical.

Heat energy, from gravitational collapse, impacts, tidal forces, or radioactive decay, also factors into whether an object will be spherical or not ; Saturn's icy moon Mimas is spheroidal, but Neptune's larger moon Proteus, which is similarly composed but colder because of its greater distance from the Sun, is irregular.
