Among the Laboratory's current major active projects are the Mars Science Laboratory mission ( which includes the Curiosity rover ), the Cassini – Huygens mission orbiting Saturn, the Mars Exploration Rovers ( Spirit and Opportunity ), the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the Dawn mission to the dwarf planet Ceres and asteroid Vesta, the Juno spacecraft en route to Jupiter, the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory ( GRAIL ) mission to the Moon, the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array ( NuSTAR ) X-ray telescope, and the Spitzer Space Telescope.

A later study published in 2010 revealed that imaging of Rhea from the Cassini mission was inconsistent with the predicted properties of the rings, suggesting that some other mechanism is responsible for the magnetic effects that had led to the ring hypothesis.

The Cassini – Huygens mission to Titan discovered clouds formed from methane or ethane which deposit rain composed of liquid methane and other organic compounds.

* Mars Pathfinder, Mars Exploration Rover and the Cassini probe to Saturn use a k of 15 and a rate of 1 / 6 ; this code performs about 2 dB better than the simpler k = 7 code at a cost of 256 × in decoding complexity ( compared to Voyager mission codes ).

However, the Cassini – Huygens mission fly-by of Venus in 1999 detected no signs of lightning at all.

The Cassini – Huygens mission, which went into orbit around Saturn in 2004, provided still better views, and allowed more in-depth analysis of the moon, including views of the surface under different lighting conditions.

There have been many other approaches over the course of the Cassini mission, and future flybys may yield additional data.

A dual technique magnetometer is part of the Cassini – Huygens mission to explore Saturn.

In April 1791, the academy's Metric Commission confided this mission to Jean-Dominique de Cassini, Adrien-Marie Legendre and Pierre Méchain.

The Huygens probe was an atmospheric entry probe carried to Saturn's moon Titan as part of the Cassini – Huygens mission.

Due to the recent interest in Titan, associated with the Cassini – Huygens mission, its ionosphere is perhaps the most thoroughly modeled today.

The radio transponder designed for the Cassini – Huygens mission was used as a cost-saving measure.

Finally, in 1740 the French astronomer Jacques Cassini, who is traditionally credited with the invention of year zero, completed the transition in his Tables astronomiques, simply labeling this year 0, which he placed at the end of Julian years labeled avant Jesus-Christ ( before Jesus Christ or BC ), and immediately before Julian years labeled après Jesus-Christ ( after Jesus Christ or AD ).

After he had taken deacon's orders, however, he concentrated on science, and, through the patronage of Jacques Cassini, obtained employment, first in surveying the coast from Nantes to Bayonne, then, in 1739, in remeasuring the French arc of the meridian, for which he is honored with a pyramid at Juvisy-sur-Orge.

The success of this difficult operation, which occupied two years, and achieved the correction of the anomalous result published by J. Cassini in 1718, was mainly due to Lacaille's industry and skill.

Oddly, Cassini seems to have abandoned this reasoning, which Rømer adopted and set about buttressing in an irrefutable manner, using a selected number of observations performed by Picard and himself between 1671 and 1677.

Ten centuries after Bede, the French astronomers Philippe de la Hire ( in the year 1702 ) and Jacques Cassini ( in the year 1740 ), purely to simplify certain calculations, put the Julian Dating System ( proposed in the year 1583 by Joseph Scaliger ) and with it an astronomical era into use, which contains a leap year zero, which precedes the year 1 ( AD ) but does not exactly coincide with the year 1 BC.

Colbert has the honour of having founded the Academy of Sciences ( now part of the Institut de France ), the Paris Observatory, which he employed Claude Perrault to build and brought Giovanni Domenico Cassini ( 1625 – 1712 ) from Italy to superintend, the Academies of Inscriptions and Medals, of Architecture and of Music, the French Academy at Rome, and Academies at Arles, Soissons, Nîmes and many other towns.

The 6. 7-year transit was slightly longer than the six years needed for a Hohmann transfer, but cut the total amount of delta V needed to about 2 km / s, so that the large and heavy Cassini probe was able to reach Saturn, which would not have been possible in a direct transfer even with the Titan IV, the largest launch vehicle available at the time.

Note also that the minimum speed achieved during Saturnian orbit is more or less equal to Saturn's own orbital velocity, which is the ~ 5 km / s velocity which Cassini matched to enter orbit.

Second, Huygens did not send any readable data to the Earth ; it transmitted data to the Cassini orbiter, which relayed the data received to the Earth later.

Long after launch, a few persistent engineers discovered that the communication equipment on Cassini had a potentially fatal design flaw, which would have caused the loss of all data transmitted by the Huygens probe.

As Huygens was too small to transmit directly to Earth, it was designed to transmit the telemetry data obtained while descending through Titan's atmosphere to Cassini by radio, which would in turn relay it to Earth using its large 4-meter diameter main antenna.

Throughout the fight, Cassini moved his head from side to side, which resulted in multiple head butts.

In the tenth round, he slipped and fell to the floor as Cassini threw a punch, which was scored as a knockdown.

Mimas has been imaged several times by the Cassini orbiter, which entered into orbit around Saturn in 2004.

However, images from Cassini indicate that Phoebe's craters show a considerable variation in brightness, which indicate the presence of large quantities of ice below a relatively thin blanket of dark surface deposits some thick.

A Cassini oval, by contrast, is the locus of points for which the product of these distances is constant.
