The narrative opens with Mr Bingley, a wealthy, charming and social young bachelor, moving into Netherfield Park in the neighbourhood of the Bennet family.
Mr Bingley singles out Elizabeth's elder sister, Jane, for particular attention, and it soon becomes apparent that they have formed an attachment to each other.
At a ball given by Mr Bingley at Netherfield, Mr Darcy becomes aware of a general expectation that Mr Bingley and Jane will marry, and the Bennet family, with the exception of Jane and Elizabeth, make a public display of poor manners and decorum.

Set in England in the early 19th century, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet's ( Benjamin Whitrow and Alison Steadman ) five unmarried daughters ( Susannah Harker, Jennifer Ehle, Lucy Briers, Polly Maberly, Julia Sawalha ) after the rich and eligible Mr. Bingley ( Crispin Bonham-Carter ) and his status-conscious friend, Mr. Darcy, have moved into their neighbourhood.
Episode 1 – Mr. Charles Bingley, a rich man from the north of England, settles down at Netherfield estate near Meryton village in Hertfordshire for the summer.
Bingley takes an immediate liking to Jane at a local country-dance, while his best friend Mr. Darcy, rumoured to be twice as rich, refuses to stand up with anyone including Elizabeth.
The producers found Crispin Bonham-Carter to have the best physical contrast to Firth's Darcy and gave him his first major television role as the good-natured and wealthy Mr. Charles Bingley.
Anna Chancellor of Four Weddings and a Funeral fame played Mr. Bingley's sister Caroline Bingley ( of interest to Austen fans Anna Chancellor is also Jane Austen's niece by eight generations ).
The adaptation comically exaggerates the characters of Mrs. Bennet, Miss Bingley and Mr. Collins, even showing Mrs. Bennet on the verge of hysteria in many of the early scenes.
