At a 1963 Chamber Chorus concert at New York's Town Hall, Lucier met Gordon Mumma and Robert Ashley, experimental composers who were also directors of the ONCE Festival, an annual multi-media event in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Along with Gordon Mumma, Ashley was also a major pioneer of audio synthesis.

He was a co-founder of the ONCE Group, as well as a member of the Sonic Arts Union, which also included David Behrman, Alvin Lucier, and Gordon Mumma.

Ashley and Mumma were " serious tinkers in electronics ," working before synthesizers and electronic musical instruments were commercially available.
