A chambered cairn is a burial monument, usually constructed during the Neolithic, consisting of a cairn of stones inside which a sizeable ( usually stone ) chamber was constructed.

The burial chamber is normally located at one end of a rectangular or trapezoidal cairn, while a roofless, semi-circular forecourt at the entrance provided access from the outside ( although the entrance itself was often blocked ), and gives this type of chambered cairn its alternate name of court tomb or court cairn.

Some Egyptologists suggest this Lower Chamber was intended to be the original burial chamber, but Pharaoh Khufu later changed his mind and wanted it to be higher up in the pyramid.

Two major groups of Neolithic architectural traditions are represented in the area: portal dolmens ( e. g. St Lythans burial chamber ( Vale of Glamorgan ), and Cae ' rarfau ( near Creigiau )); and Severn-Cotswold chamber tombs ( e. g. For this, KV20, originally quarried for her father, Thutmose I, and probably the first royal tomb in the Valley of the Kings, was extended with a new burial chamber.
